Officials at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center have found an interesting way to keep prisoners occupied and in shape, providing choreographers to assist prisoners in developing dance routines.
In 2007 prisoners choreographed and danced to Michael Jackson's Thriller. Video taped and posted on YouTube, the video became a favorite world wide and currently has over 52 millions views. In 2009 they performed to Michael Jackson's Dangerous. That YouTube video received nearly 3 million views. Apparently not being able to get enough of Jackson, they decided to hold another "event", and with the help of Michael Jacksons' Choreographer Travis Payne and dancers Daniel Celebre and Dres Reid, prisoners performed a choreographed dance to Michael Jackson's They Don't Care About Us in 2010.
These promenading prisoners are once again strutting their stuff, this time to Psy's global hit song Gangnam Style. Posted to YouTube on Sept. 29th, the video has already received 1.1 million views.
Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center is a maximum security prison in Cebu, in the Cebu Province, Philippines. Byron F. Garcia, official security adviser to the Cebu government, decided to introduce an exercise program where the prisoners marched in unison. Initially using a simple drum beat, the program progressed to using pop music. The first song used was Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall", one of Garcia's favorite songs. He decided to use campier music such as the Village People's In the Navy and Y.M.C.A.
Although Garcia's uploaded a video of the prisoner's choreographed Algorithm March, it was the Thriller video that brought the program to the world's attention.
The prisoners began doing public appearances in 2007.
According to Inquirer, Vince Rosales, choreographer for the Gangman Style video, said in an interview: “A lot of people have been asking us to dance Gangnam because it is very popular. So I showed the video to the inmates and explained to them that this is the latest dance craze outside the CPDRC. They liked it and were excited to learn the steps. I received a call from a French news agency. They wanted to visit and personally witness the Gangnam dance. “
