In some busy restaurants in Peshawar, Pepsi and other popular drinks have disappeared and you only get Coca Cola and Sprite, and the reason is a special business offer.
For those eating in public restaurants in Peshawar, it will be observable at some restaurants that Coca Cola and Sprite are the only available soft drink choices lately. On the university road, some restaurants no longer keep other soft drinks, including Pespi and Mountain Dew, while offering only Coca Cola and Sprite to customers who come there to have lunch or dinner.
One such restaurant is Ahmed Jan’s Food Shop, the most popular small restaurant with two service points close to each other along the main university road. Until recently, Mountain Dew and Pepsi were the most popular soft drinks that people, mostly middle class students living in private hostels in the area, ordered at meals. However, for the past couple of months, these drinks have become obsolete and you only get Coca Cola or Sprite at both of these restaurants.
Upon asking one of the waiters, it turned out that Coca Cola and Sprite dealers have placed two deep freezers, one in each of these restaurants, without charging them a dime – except in bargain for the restaurants not to serve any other drinks but these two. The waiter tells that the two freezers have been placed at their service on a “contract” to only serve Coca Cola and Sprite as soft drinks available in the restaurant and these two together cost about a hundred thousand rupees.
Pepsi is also not available in some other restaurants in the area while Coca Cola and Sprite literally fill the place in every restaurant. However, this is not the case with general stores where all popular brands of soft drinks are still available.
