The Syrian government has moved some of their chemical weapons in order to ensure their safety says US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.
According to corroborating reports from BBC News, Haaretz and others Mr. Panetta has stated that U.S. intelligence indicates "limited movement" of Syria's chemical weapons for security purposes. The Defense Secretary however stated that "the major sites still remain in place."
Syria has a large stockpile of chemical weapons which include but are not limited to mustard and sarin gases that according to the CIA "can be delivered by aircraft, ballistic missile, and artillery rockets." These weapons are allegedly stored in some 50 towns and cities across the Syrian state, the stockpile in total is approximately estimated to be about 1,000 tonnes.
Mr. Panetta made these statements at a news conference held at the Pentagon today (Friday September 28, 2012). He stated that, "We continue to have a concern about the security of the CBW (chemical and biological weapons) sites."
