The Mexican authorities have announced that they have arrested drug lord Ivan Velazquez Caballero, one of the country's most wanted with regard to drug trafficking.
BBC News and the Irish Independent, among others, have reported the arrest in Mexico of the commander of the Zetas drug cartel Ivan Velazquez Caballero.
Also known as El Taliban, Mr. Caballero used brute and ruthless means to maintain control over important smuggling routes to funnel contraband into the United States. $2.3 million was offered to anyone able to capture him. An apparent internal battle within the Zetas has seen to a split in the Zeta gang which has resulted in an increased amount of violence in northern Mexico.
His arrest comes a day after he allegedly split from the Zetas gang and joined its rival the Gulf Cartel. Upon his arrest by marines in the Mexican city of San Luis Potosi he was paraded in handcuffs by police along with two alleged accomplices of his along with their contraband and weaponry that the authorities seized upon making the arrest.
