Linda Lewis was 62 years old yesterday. Who is she? Another enormously talented singer-songwriter who didn't quite find super-stardom.
Without wishing to sound unkind to Britney Spears, there really is no comparison. Linda Lewis was born at West Ham - just down the road from Andy Powell - on September 27, 1950. Although a child actress, it wasn't until 1973 that she achieved fame with a capital F when the single Rock-A-Doodle-Doo - which she co-wrote - made the UK singles chart.
She produced a steady stream of music through the 1970s and late 1990s, but neither her extraordinary 5 octave vocal range nor her songwriting talent brought her the same success in the States as for example the much younger Bic Runga.
Currently, the man from SongFacts has only two of her tracks in his database, including the aforementioned Rock-A-Doodle-Doo, but the good news is that she is still around, and on September 15 appeared at the 35th anniversary memorial concert for Marc Bolan.
She has no tour dates confirmed at present, but watch this space.
