By Brett Wilkins.
A supermarket in Austria has stoked widespread outrage by selling pre-peeled bananas in plastic-wrapped styrofoam containers.
Time reports that the German-owned Billa supermarket chain is selling the fruits, baffling many people who believe that the banana is nature's perfectly-packaged snack.
Billa, which bills itself as the "common sense supermarket," has had to shut down its Facebook page after being inundated with angry comments. Many customers spoke of a boycott.
Environmentalists also weighed in.
"If there is an easy-to-open, ready-packed food it's the banana," a spokesman for Greenpeace in Austria told the Austrian Times. "Peeling it only to pack it in environmentally-unfriendly plastic is just madness."
Billa apologized for what it called a "one-off" mistake and assured customers that it would not happen again.
