Meet Daniel Pipes, distinguished historian, political commentator, and advocate of mass murder including assassinations and bombing raids.
Daniel Pipes is one of those people who talks out of both sides of his mouth simultaneously. Ten years ago he founded Campus Watch, a project that in its own words "fully respects the freedom of speech of those it debates while insisting on its own freedom to comment on their words and deeds".
It has to be said that the learnéd professor is not simply a man of words, he is a man of the deed, or of advocating the deed. Recently he was seen spouting off on an obscure television channel advocating the American Government carry out some uncompromising and indeed world changing deeds in the Middle East. If he had been talking about carrying out such deeds in the UK and on UK soil, a passing policeman might just have arrested him for incitement to murder, because not only did he advocate assassinating unnamed individuals, one of whom might just be Iran's charismatic president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, but he said the West must do anything and everything possible to ensure that Iran does not build a nuclear bomb. In case you haven't heard of nuclear bombs, they are those things that only civilised countries are allowed to have, like the one that dropped two of them on Japan in 1945.
Not content with inciting the murder of those wicked Iranians - which may require more than one air strike - a few days later, Pipes added a call for blasphemy to his cry for mass murder by suggesting that we publish a cartoon of The Prophet a day. Not only that, he has made a start himself.
The Anti-Defamation League and similar organisations believe Iranians, Arabs and Moslems generally see Zionist conspiracies and American Imperialism behind the cause of world unrest, theirs in particular, because of ignorance, bigotry and superstition, but any half-intelligent honest person who takes a cold, hard look at the work of Daniel Pipes and his fellow travellers might reasonably conclude there is another and far more rational reason.
Pipes is also living in a dream world if he thinks the US and/or Israel can attack Iran and be met with nothing more than sabre rattling by the Islamic world. An attack on Iran would result in the lunatic fringe throughout the region and indeed throughout the West striking back at Americans, Jews and Westerners worldwide. In short it would lead to a bloodbath, and the war on terror all over again. Who but a madman would want to see that?
