article imageChace Crawford: 'Gossip Girl' + 'Peace, Love & Misunderstanding' Special

By Earl Dittman     Sep 21, 2012 in Entertainment
With the end of the series 'Gossip Girl' in Chace's proverbial rearview mirror, the former teen heartthrob has embarked on a motion picture career that now includes aa appearance in the recently-released indie comedy 'Peace, Love and Misunderstanding.'
"I owe Gossip Girl a lot, it's what put my on the map as an actor....I'm going to miss it," laments 27-year-old Chace Crawford about the upcoming sixth and final season of the hit television series. "I had done just a couple of things -- like a TV movie (Long Lost Song) and a horror flick (The Covenant) -- before I landed the role of Nate (Archibald) on Gossip Girl (in 2007). But, if I hadn't of gotten the part, I don't know where I'd be now. It opened up a lot of doors for me. It's allowed me to do movies that I want to make. For instance, I don't think (director) Bruce Beresford would have even known who I was if I wasn't a regular on Gossip Girl. At the same time, though, I think all of us involved on the show are all leaving behind a great body of work that we can be proud of. I know I'm proud of the hundred or so Gossip Girl episodes we‘ve done. To become an actor, doing the show was the best education I could have received. It taught me practically everything I know about acting."
Born in Lubbock, Texas and raised in the Dallas suburb of Plano, surprisingly, Christopher Chace Crawford never even considered acting as a career option until he had already begun attending college. "I was having fun playing football and golf while I was a teenager, and I don't think I even dreamed about being an actor on television or in movies,” he says. “I was busy thinking about a career in marketing, advertising or communications." After graduating high school, Crawford moved to Los Angeles to attend Pepperdine University, where he struggled with the decision about what exactly he wanted to do with the rest of his life. Crawford had done some modeling and taken a few acting classes while still in Texas, but that was the extent of his show business experience. By his sophomore year at Pepperdine, however, Crawford's teacher mother suggested to her son that he might give acting a serious try.

"When my mom told me I might want to focus on becoming an actor while I was in LA, I was a little blown away," he remembers. "Most parents try to steer their kids away from acting as a career choice -- because it's so risky. But not my mom, she really encouraged me to go for it." It seems that Dana Crawford, Chace's mom, recalled that her boy had taken a career aptitude test while still in high school, and the test results indicated that her son would be best suited for a career in the performing arts. "I don't remember the test, but I'm glad she did," he says with a laugh. "Honestly, at that point in my life, I wasn't dead set on what I wanted to do, so I thought, 'Why not?'" Securing himself an agent, Crawford scored the abovementioned film gigs before he auditioned and landed the role of the young, affluent Nate Archibald, one of the main leads on Gossip Girl, a series created by Josh Schwartz, the man behind The O.C.
Based on the book by Cecily von Ziegesar, Gossip Girl tells the story of one of Manhattan's most notorious bloggers, "Gossip Girl." The mysterious internet gossiper (Kristen Bell) would spend a great deal of her time keeping tabs on New York City's most elite teens from the Upper East Side, as they made the rounds from the preppiest school events to the most lavish, decadent parties. In addition to Crawford, Gossip Girl features an ensemble cast filled with most of young Hollywood's hottest talent, including the recently married Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Ed Westwick, Kaylee DeFer and Ella Rae Peck. Once the show began airing in 2007, it immediately developed a huge, loyal and nearly rabid fan base of teenage and young adult female television viewers. Consequently, almost overnight, Crawford would become a sex symbol and a bonafide teen heartthrob. "One day, I'm nobody, and once Gossip Girl started, the next day, millions of girls and women were in love with me and my character -- it was crazy," Crawford recounts. "That kind of attention was thrilling at first, but as time went by, I realized that being a 'celebrity' comes with a price. Your private life just goes out the window. Over the seasons, I tried to learn how to balance fame with real life. Look, I'm a Texas boy, I like to do normal things without it showing up in magazines. Luckily, it's gotten better over the kind of peaked, and then it sort of, it's at least manageable."

While things have gotten easier in real life for the actors of the series, in the fifth season of Gossip Girl (available on DVD beginning September 25), their fictional characters -- everyone's favorite socialites -- were back to their wicked, scandalous ways. Suntanned Serena (Lively) has found the perfect summer job in Los Angeles when Chuck (Westwick) and Nate (Crawford) -- who are still on their posh trip around the globe -- pay her a visit. Meanwhile, back on the Upper East Side, Blair (Meester) is still dealing with the impossible choice between Prince Louis (Hugo Becker) and Chuck, and Dan's (Badgley) world is suddenly shattered when he discovers that someone has gone behind his back and found an editor to anonymously publish one of his stories. Terrified of his friends and family reading his brilliant-but-honest critique of New York high society, Dan might not be able to refuse the fame and fortune of a published author. Finally, the surprise return of Serena's cousin Charlie (Peck) threatens to destroy the Van der Woodsen family from within.
"I think we had a great season with the fifth one," Crawford says. "A lot of things changed in the story, but a lot still stayed faithful to what we started out to do. I think it was probably one of our best seasons." Towards the end of Season Five, however, the cast and crew were given notice that there would be another year of Gossip Girl, but it would be a shorten, ten-episode final season. "I don't think we were shocked when we heard the news," he admits. "We have always done good in the ratings, but I guess we weren't hitting the right numbers anymore -- who knows? I'm just glad that they gave us the chance to wrap up all the storylines and give us the chance to say goodbye to our fans."

During the past half-decade, Crawford has spent his summer hiatuses and weekends off from Gossip Girl scoring parts in indie and studio films such as Loaded, The Haunting of Molly Hartley, Twelve and last year's What To Expect When You're Expecting. In his latest picture, Peace, Love and Misunderstanding, directed by two-time Academy Award-nominee Bruce Beresford (Tender Mercies, Driving Miss Daisy), Crawford plays a young butcher who gets caught up in a hilarious, poignant and touching story about three generations of women (Jane Fonda, Catherine Keener and Elizabeth Olsen) trying to come to terms with one another. Working with the Oscar-nominated Beresford -- in the heartfelt comedy about second chances and the things that divide and reunite families -- was one of the main reasons Crawford wanted to be involved with the motion picture. "Bruce was great, he was phenomenal and I love every film he has made," Crawford explains. "And, luckily, getting the part was a real smooth process. I remember I was in LA, and they sent me the script and I had just finished it when they said, 'You need to go in today.' It was really a quick thing. I got it right away, and I was growing a beard and hadn't really shaved, so it worked. I went in there, and he made me real comfortable. We played around with it. But they liked me, and the next thing you know, we got the schedule. And it worked out, because I was shooting Gossip Girl here in New York. I got a rental car, and would drive upstate every weekend for like six weekends. But it was cool when we were working, he's just so good with actors. He let us improv, too, and let us throw some things away. He let us do our own thing, which was a blessing."
In Peace, Love and Misunderstanding (released on Blu-ray/DVD on October 2), when the husband of uptight Manhattan female lawyer, Diane (Oscar-nominated Keener), tells her he wants a divorce, the devastated wife decides to head upstate with her two teens -- her teenage son Jake (Nat Wolff) and daughter Zoe (Olsen) -- to Woodstock to stay with her estranged flower-child mother (two-time Oscar-winner Fonda). The crazy part is that the kids have never met Grace. In fact, Diane hasn't spoken to her mother in twenty years. Grace is the epitome of the term “hippie”: she stages protests and hootenannies in the town square, smokes (and sells) a lot of dope, and howls at the moon once a month with her goddess-worshipping girlfriends. However, while spending time in this charming village, Diane and her city kids get a new perspective on life: poetry-reading daughter Zoe becomes interested in Cole (Crawford), a sensitive young butcher, nerdy son Jake finds material for his first film project, and Diane herself grows close to a handsome carpenter/singer (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Most importantly, Diane finally gets the chance to end the ancient war with the mother she has not seen for decades.

"It's a really sweet movie that I am so glad I did," Crawford says of Peace, Love and Misunderstanding. "It got a really great response at the Toronto Film Festival, last fall, and everyone got a lot of laughs. It's really a generational film. Hopefully, it's one of those kind of movies that audiences find really entertaining. I do, and I'm a really tough critic."
This past June, Crawford was in New York City to promote the theatrical opening of Peace, Love and Misunderstand and to finish up filming on the final season of Gossip Girl. Holed up in Manhattan's posh Regency Hotel, Crawford talked about coming to terms with the end of Gossip Girl, recalls his days of overly-devoted fans, what it was like making Peace, Love and Misunderstanding, learning to cook, his musical ambitions and his thoughts about starring in a rock biopic.

Let's start off with Gossip Girl. Now that it is about to come to an end, when you look back on doing the show, there are probably a lot of things you didn't expect, like the rabid fan base. As an actor, what are some of the things that you're going to take away from your experience of doing the series?
"Well, this was one of the first things I've ever done. I'd done a couple independent films, but to have that day-to-day exercise on set, and not having it in your head, you learn to toss everything else aside. You learn to play around with the other person and go with it. So I think subconsciously, you just learn to go with the flow of it everyday, and being on call and on set. You endure the long hours, and know what to expect. The toughest part is the audition process, and fighting for the role. And it's the chase in films, as far as my next phase in life. The chase of movies is almost the most exciting. Once that's over with, I'm good and focused. I know what it's like to have the role. The exciting part is that fight for it. And once you get over that, the fun begins. It's the whole technical side of it too. I'm not intimidated by the people behind the cameras. I've been doing this for five years, so that's one of the biggest assets to have coming out of it. Aside from that, it's given me everything. The crew and the cast, it's very comparable to a college experience. Especially for people like Ed (Westwick), who never even lived in the States. He came over, and was like twenty, twenty-one. He kind of had that experience with the guys and the girls. And I don't know if it will ever be as good, or if I'll ever have it quite as good as in New York. Having this fantasy world, and having a consistent job and being on the radar. But it was a lot of fun, and we had a really great run."
If it ever happened in the future, can you imagine what the Gossip Girl reunion show be like?
"It would be something like The Avengers! (laughs) They would bring back The O.C. and the cast from Dawson's Creek. And we'd have this crazy, emotional, big cry. I don't know? I guess they could kill anyone of us off, and we could come back! That's not out of the blue now, apparently, with Bart Bass. The reunion, I don't know? We'd have to have a group discussion if that would ever take place."

Do you have any funny fan stories during your tenure on Gossip Girl?
"Yeah, there have been some interesting ones. There was this one fan who was always on set. We'd get out of the vans or come out of the studio, and there would always be this fan there. We all got these mini, tiny, kind of like for kindergarteners, lunchboxes. They had collages of our faces all over the whole thing. And it would have been really sweet if it was from like a twelve year old girl or something. But it was a thirty-six year-old man giving us these things. He was always outside, for the first two years. But after the first couple of years, we'd only see him every now and again. We'd be in the middle of a set, and he'd walk up and say, 'Hey. Good to see you.' He was right there with us. He didn't want any more pictures, but he said, 'Good to see you.' Looking back, I guess Phil was a good guy."
You often talk about always being on the radar and always being accessible to the press and fans. I imagine that kind of attention and adulation is something that you won't miss? Right?
"Ha! Yeah, I think it's safe to say, for my personality type, and the way I function best, I won't miss it that much, to be honest. It kind of peaked, and then it sort of plateaued. I definitely felt it in a sense relaxing, which has been nice. But it's a double-edged sword. Certain aspects of that gets the ball rolling. It gets you on the map, and in some sense, on the board. Which is always a good thing. It opens doors. But aside from getting a good seat at a restaurant, there's not too much about it that I'll miss. I mean, it's always good to feel the genuine love -- and love for the show and character, and the fan base. But it is also nice to slip under the radar a little bit sometimes."

Are there any pairings left that haven't happened on Gossip Girl that you would like to see in the final ten episodes?
"Well, you wouldn't have to twist my arm to get Elizabeth Hurley back on the show! Yeah, that was tough. But I don't know if there are any other pairings that I'd be dying to see. There are a few mothers out there on the show that we haven't really crossed paths yet. But, I honestly don't even know what to expect from this last lap."
Okay, let's move on to your new movie, Peace, Love and Misunderstanding. Did you have to get in touch with your inner hippie to play your character, Cole?“I like Tom Petty, and I think my music tastes might be of that era partly. But other than that, not really, no! But my grandfather and my grandma have some good stories.”

What was it like romancing Elizabeth Olsen in the movie?
"We have a nice little arc. But I had no expectations, she's an Olsen! I met them (the Olsen twins), and they're lovely. I heard she went to NYU. And I started working with her, and just started talking with her. I feel like I'm a judge of talent, and there's something about her and her character. I said, 'This girl's good. She's got that thing about her.' We became really close, and we're still good friends. She would be here, but I think she's shooting something over in Serbia. This was her first project ever, and she took off from college. I think she had like a year, or a semester, left. We would talk about scripts all the time. And I asked her if she had anything, and she said she went in for Sean Durkin for Martha Marcy May Marlene. She said he seemed really cool, and the script seemed really original. And the next thing I know, I went to a screening for it out here. I was blown away by her performance. There's kind of that feeling of pride, because I got to know her. So it was a cool experience for me to see this, and get a good friend out of this. We'll be in LA, and she'll have a barbeque or something, and I'll go hang out with her. But she's great, and she was really natural. It was really natural in the scenes to play off her, and keep it natural."
What was Jane Fonda like?
"You know, I didn't have any scenes with her, actually. I think we had a scene where it was overlapping. But in the overlapping scenes, yeah, I would use playful to describe Jane. She's like awesome. She came to the crew parties, and would dance and have a good time. She's just really engaging, you know what I mean? She's very charismatic. And even though we didn't work together, she would pull me aside and asked me where I'm from. She was really interested in Texas and Dallas, where I'm from. And that just thrilled my mother and grandmother. But yeah, I was a little awestruck. She just has this aura around her. She has a really good energy."
Jane Fonda in Peace Love and Misunderstanding.

Do you share the same philosophy that Cole, your character, has about meat?
"I guess so, yeah. Is Jane's character a vegetarian? I remember we discussed it a little bit. But being from Texas, I'm not too picky about my meat. Actually, I learned a lot, to be honest. Like the place we shot at, and there are a couple places in the city that I've been to that has had their name up on the list where they get their meat from organically grown farms. But as far as actually butchering and cutting the meat, I learned nothing."
You didn't have to go to chopping school?
" No! I didn't have to go to chopping school for this one. I did have to go for another film that came out recently (What to Expect When You're Expecting). I went to a couple of classes, but that was it."

What kind of cooking did you study to do What To Expect When You're Expecting (which also stars Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Anna Kendrick and Brooklyn Decker)?
"I play opposite Anna Kendrick, so they had me and Anna working on food sets in the script in Atlanta -- in the ninety-five degree summer. We had these chopping classes, and we had this Sous-chef come in there. I can make you a really crappy salad. But we were chopping potatoes and avocados and peppers, and that was it. All I wanted to get was the right motion down, and do it quick and whip something up.”
So you didn't actually chop anything up?
"In the scene, I think I was chopping something. But I can't even remember what it was. I think it was peppers, or something. And by the time I was done with those things, it was mush!"
What do you think was the most important thing you learned about filming Peace, Love and Misunderstanding in the upper part of New York state?
" You gotta be careful on the wines, there are a lot of good wines up there. So yeah, you gotta watch out. (laughs) But I don't know, I guess more than anything, I learned it was a blessing to shoot there. As opposed to shooting on 59th and Park for Gossip Girl, with a million people around. But it was really nice. There were a lot of chickens around. But there wasn't anything really challenging. It was actually nice and isolated and open. It was really liberating and comfortable. So it was really easy, and there weren't any distractions. And it was a blessing to shoot in a place like New Paltz. I've been out to the Hamptons, the other way, a couple times to check it out. That was the polar opposite. But Jeffrey (Dean Morgan) actually lives up there. We were just talking about it and I said, 'You've got the dream.' He's got the dream house and the dogs, and the truck and the wife. I kind of got to experience that. The show gave me Fridays off, and I would drive up there. My scenes were short, they would kind of spread it out. I would have one or two scenes a weekend. To be honest, it was more of a vacation than anything. So I had a really good experience."

Did you get to swim in Lake Minnewaska?
" I wish! What was the lake, I forgot, it's been almost two years since we shot this. There was a scene where we were sitting over the lake. I don't know if it was Minnewaska, I don't think it was. But it was beautiful. It was fall, and it was getting a little cooler. You could see, there were two people swimming by themselves in this massive lake. That's more my style! In Texas, I grew up on a lake. It's like a one hundred degrees in bath water, you know what I mean? You've got the hills and the trees and everything. It's not tough. But it's a great place, beautiful. We shot in New Paltz, and we went into Rhinebeck. We went into the town, and shot there maybe one day. Or at least, I only shot there one day. That town is so quaint and beautiful."
Do you have any musical aspirations?
"Yeah. I think if I get into music, it's definitely going to be with a Gossip Girl band. I'm really going to try to pull for that one, because everyone is so musically inclined. Penn (Badgly) is quiet, he doesn't talk about it. But he has a mini-studio in his apartment. He is so talented, and I couldn't be more happy for him. I'm friends with everyone, I have a good relationship with everyone. And I couldn't be more happy for the Jeff Buckley role in Greetings from Tim Buckley to come along for him. He looks a lot like Jeff Buckley, and he's so musically talented. So I was really happy he could showcase it in something like that. As far as the fascination with one or the other, it's tough. I've dabbled with the guitar, but I'm never going to take it anywhere. I guess the best artists crave different outlets like that. If you're a talented actor, that's not going to translate into a talented musician all the time. I choose to stick to one thing."

You went through dance training when you were attached to the Footloose remake, are you training in anything musical these days?
"No, I haven't been. Dirty Dancing, no! I haven't really been approached for anything. I'm more of Guns 'N Roses, Motley Crue, Nirvana fan. I've heard rumblings of certain things, of biopics and epic stories that could possibly be a movie. I grew up on Nirvana, so that would be interesting. But dancing, I don't know if that would be a part of that. But it would be something that would be cool."
Warner Bros.
Who would be your ideal rock star that you would want to portray in a biopic?
"I have no idea? I'm trying to think, that's a tough one. I'm a huge Frank Sinatra fan. I'm not saying that's something I'd be able to do. I hear it's in the works. I'm following it, not for myself, but because I'm a huge Frank fan. But that would be the ideal and cool. Rock, I don't know. I'm a big Guns 'N Roses, Pearl Jam, classic, old school stuff. Maybe some day...."

Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures
In June of 1981 director Steven Spielberg and executive producer George Lucas introduced the world to Indiana Jones when the unforgettable Raiders of the Lost Ark debuted in theaters. The cinematic classic that started it all — Raiders of the Lost Ark— has been meticulously restored under the supervision of director Steven Spielberg and sound designer Ben Burtt. Additionally, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade have both been remastered, alongside 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull making this landmark release the first time all four films in the epic and award-winning franchise have been available together in sparkling high definition. Raiders of the Lost Ark has been painstakingly restored with careful attention to preserving the original look, sound and feel of the iconic film. The sound design was similarly preserved using the original master mix, which had been archived and unused since 1981. New stereo surrounds were created using the original music tracks and original effects recorded in stereo but used previously only in mono. In addition, the sub bass was redone entirely up to modern specifications and care was taken to improve dialogue and correct small technical flaws to create the most complete and highest quality version of the sound possible while retaining the director’s vision. In addition to all of Indy’s thrilling adventures, the set includes seven hours of fascinating documentaries, featurettes and interviews with cast members and filmmakers. Absolutely Fabulous: 20th Anniversary Specials
They’re back, darlings. International comedy sensations Jennifer Saunders (French & Saunders) and Joanna Lumley (The Corpse Bride) return to their celebrated roles as Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone in three all-new specials, written by Jennifer Saunders. It's been twenty years since we first met them, and the ladies are a tiny bit older, none the wiser, but definitely still Absolutely Fabulous. The original fashionistas, PR rep Eddy and best friend/enabler Patsy, were often found at the bottom of a champagne bottle – and not much has changed. Eddy’s daughter Saffron (Julia Sawalha, Cranford) is still hard-working and largely ignored. Eddy’s mother (June Whitfield, Doctor Who) is still around, and still unwanted. Bubble (Jane Horrocks, Little Voice), Eddy’s colorful assistant, is still… well, Bubble. In the first of the new specials, there’s a homecoming for one of the ladies who has been “away” for quite some time. She returns with her new, slightly scary best friend in tow, with wide reaching ramifications- including forcing a certain person to own up to her real age… if she can still remember what it is. In the second special, Eddy sets her sights on changing the career of a very big fish indeed; and in the final special, Eddy and Patsy play their own very special part in the London 2012 Olympics. Suburgatory: The Complete First Season
Manicured lawns. Cookie-cutter homes. Big lips. Little nose jobs. Synchronized sprinkler systems that erupt at the exact same time. Forget purgatory -- this is Suburgatory. Explore one of TV's quirkiest suburban neighborhoods on Suburgatory: The Complete First Season. Created and executive produced by Emily Kapnek (Parks & Recreation, Hung), this satirical comedy series centers on Tessa (Jane Levy - Shameless), a witty New York City teenager who is perfectly at ease navigating her urban jungle hometown. So when her well-meaning dad, George (Jeremy Sisto - Six Feet Under, Law & Order), relocates her to greener pastures, Tessa goes into culture shock. While the suburbs may be heaven for many, for Tessa, they represent her own unique version of hell. She and George wake up in a cookie-cutter world populated by pseudo-civilized suburbanites like well-meaning mom Dallas Royce (Cheryl Hines - Curb Your Enthusiasm) and her pouty daughter, Dalia (Carly Chaikin - The Last Song). Though slightly out of place in their new world, George and Tessa use wit, laughter and love to "adapt" to their new lifestyle -- though not without a few culture clashes along the way! The Wrath of God
The movie gods are playful in the action-oriented The Wrath of God – frisky, risky, violent, over the top and delivering a cast that includes Robert Mitchum, Frank Langella in an early-career performance and, in her last role, unforgettable Rita Hayworth. “This is the kind of movie we don’t see very often anymore: a simple, dashing tale told for sheer fun,” writes Roger Ebert in a review. Screen tough-guy Mitchum plays Oliver Van Horne, a U.S. priest on a supposed fund-raising mission in a strife-torn Latin American land. But if he is a priest, you might wonder about the machine-gun nestled in the case he carries. The pistol hidden in a Bible and the crucifix that serves as a lethal switchblade may also come in handy as he comes to the defense of people oppressed by a tyrant. God works in mysterious ways, says the combative man of the cloth. Especially if one of those ways is the enigmatic Van Horne. Understanding Art: Impressionism
Understanding Art: Impressionism is an entertaining, accessible, and educational exploration of the highly popular art movement. Renowned critic Waldemar Januszczak (Every Picture Tells a Story) presents this lively documentary on the legendary artists of the impressionist movement. This four-part 2011 program sheds light on the motley collection of personalities that revolutionized art. The sunny landscapes and shimmering portraits of the 19th century impressionists adorn candy boxes and designer T-shirts. But as critic Waldemar Januszczak reveals in this four-part documentary, the artistic movement didn’t always enjoy the widespread popularity it has today. In their time, impressionists were artistic rebels who threw out the rules set by Paris’s prestigious art salons. As Januszczak visits the studios, hot spots, and rustic vistas that inspired the artists, he sheds light on a motley collection of personalities, from Jean-Frédéric Bazille, a gifted, nearly seven-foot-tall painter who helped bankroll his fellow artists, to Claude Monet, whose obsession with water compelled him to build a floating studio. When they banded together for eight legendary exhibitions between 1874 and 1886, they forever expanded the boundaries of art. DVD Bonus Features: The bonus programs "Manet: The Man Who Invented Modern Art" offers a portrait of the precursor to impressionism, and "Vincent: The Full Story," provides a profile of the fiery painter; a 20-page viewer’s guide with articles on the politics of impressionism, the social network, women impressionists, Paris’s hot spots, impressionist hardware, and an illustration of impressionist techniques and a biography of Waldemar Januszczak.
