article imageDavid Duchovny bares his stoner soul and butt in the film 'Goats' Special

By Earl Dittman     Sep 13, 2012 in Entertainment
The former star of 'The X-Files' -- and the current leading man of the hit cable series 'Californication' -- talks about his new film, 'Goats,' in which he plays a stoner philosopher who doesn't mind showing his bare behind.
For a split second, David Duchovny -- the actor who once played FBI Agent Fox "Spooky" Mulder in the iconic television series The X-Files -- looks rather perplexed. You see, in his latest film, Goats, Duchovny portrays a rather eccentric, dope-loving dude named the Goat Man. And, since he still plays the oversexed, substance-using character "Hank" in the hit cable series Californication, this journalist feels compelled to confront the 52-year-old actor -- in a dead serious tone -- with the rather unorthodox inquiry, "Do you ever play characters that don't get stoned?" Temporarily thrown off by the question, Duchovny raises a single eyebrow, pauses for a moment, and adopts a facial expression that makes it obvious he is desperately trying to find a relatively plausible answer to my offbeat query.
"Yeah, I don’t think I got stoned before I did The X-Files, and I don’t think I ever even took a drink," he says slowly and cautiously. "Hmmm, I don't know how to answer that, I'd have to think about it..." Actually hating to see the always affable and charming actor squirm in the proverbial press hot seat, I finally confess to Duchovny that my question wasn't meant to be a serious one. Appearing genuinely relieved by my revelation, he bursts out laughing. "Thank God, you weren't expecting a real answer, because you had me stumped," he admits. "I’m sorry, but those are the kinds of nincompoop questions I always get. The crazy thing is that I have to take them seriously when I get them or the reporters get insulted. I just thought you were stoned while asking the question."
Funny, open and thoughtful, you can ask the star of such films as Things We Lost In The Fire, The Joneses, Evolution, the pair of The X-Files feature films, Trust The Man and Full Frontal just about anything in an interview and it's rare you'll ever receive a hostile "no comment" in return. "I know there are a lot of other actors and actresses who hate doing press and act like real jerks when they do interviews," Duchovny explains. "I've been doing this for a long time, and all I have to say to them is, 'If you don't want to answer questions, then don't do interviews.' It's part of the business we're in. Doing press is a necessary evil, but I don't mind it. What do I have to hide?"

Since Duchovny is being so forthcoming, it's seems like an ideal time to ask him about his semi-nude scene in Goats. "Now, I was ready for that question," he says with a grin. "My approach to any kind of nudity is – 'Is it right? Does it make sense in this story?' In Goats, it’s the opening of the film and it’s a funny line. He says, 'Naked men shouldn’t squat.' And it encapsulates, very quickly, his relationship, his intelligence, his humor and lack of taking offense -- it’s kind of a perfect little start to the film. So that’s what I look at. I don’t look at whether my ass is showing. I don’t care. I asked myself, 'Does it make sense?' And it made sense, so I did it."
Although he's already hit the Big 5-0, an unintended side effect of his success on Californication is that a whole new generation of fans consider Duchovny a sex symbol, and they enjoy the kind of butt-bearing he displays in Goats. "Enjoy it? I think my fans, of all ages, are finding my butt less and less desirable to look at as I grow older and older -- I mean, pretty soon, I’ll need to start to talking to the horror movie people if I show it again," he jokingly replies. "And, since we are still on the subject of my ass, in Goats, what was really important to me was the tan of this guy, because he is a gardener. He is always working outside, so I knew that I would be naked at one point and I just thought, 'Well this guy would be really tanned but he wouldn’t be tanned all over like they are in the movies.' Somehow, people are always naked sunbathing in movies. They have a complete all-body tan, and I don’t know how that is realistic. So when I went to the tanning bed, I made sure I would wear shorts and socks so that my feet would be totally white, my legs would be really tanned and my ass would be totally white. For me, it was a great kind of a fun character choice to actually sit on a tanning bed which I had never done before."
Director Christopher Neil on the set of Goats
Director Christopher Neil on the set of 'Goats'
Directed by Christopher Neil, Goats (now available on Blu-ray & DVD) tells the story of 15-year-old Ellis (Graham Phillips, The Good Wife), a teenager who happens to be the most adult member of his eccentric family. His mom (Vera Farmiga, Up In The Air) is a New Age hippie that spends all of her time working on self-help rituals with her hustler boyfriend (Justin Kirk, Weeds). His dad (Ty Burrell, Modern Family) left home years ago and is more focused on his new wife (Keri Russell, Felicity) and family. And then there's Goat Man (Duchovny), the goat-herding sage who has lived in their pool house since Ellis was a child. Ellis is the only one that keeps his crazy family functioning, so when he decides to go away to an East Coast prep school, it's the rest of the family that gets an education on what it means to grow up.
Deciding to make a movie during his last Californication hiatus -- between seasons -- Duchovny says he was immediately drawn to the character of the Goat Man after reading the script by Mark Jude Poirier. "The character was interesting in that it was very different, but it had nothing to do with the drug intake," the New York City-born actor declares. "It was just kind of the pace of the guy, the kind of poet philosopher stoner, but working in a stereotypical character -- that we’ve seen that guy -- but I wanted to make him a little different. Not Cheech and Chong, but actually the philosophical center of one of them of the movie. That was the challenge for me."

The father of two children with his wife, actress Tia Leoni (the pair reportedly separated last year), Duchovny reveals that -- at its core -- Goats is simply a movie about family. Of course, it's a complex movie about familial dynamics, and Duchovny admits the subject matter makes it a hard sell when it comes to convincing movie-goers, and subsequent Blu-ray/DVD buyers, to invest their time (and hard-earned money) on the motion picture. "Trying to get people to see it has been the hardest part about doing this movie," confesses Duchovny, who recently finished filming on the upcoming movie Phantom. "You can’t really distill it into people -- you can’t say, 'It's like Batman,' and they go, 'Oh, I get it. I know what that movie is about.' Personally, when I go into the movie theatre, I just want to care about something. And that’s what is fun about seeing a movie for me. It’s not so much about the explosions, but it’s about caring about the character and going on the journey as cliché as that sounds. This is a movie without an explosion and with characters that you haven’t seen before. They are in a vein that you’ve seen before, like the stoner guys are a type that I’m playing. But it doesn’t really give you any easy answers. It’s got a bunch of laughs, and I was sitting next to my co-star who was crying, so apparently it can make you cry."
Meeting with members of the press in New York City, last month (August), just before the limited theatrical run of Goats, Duchovny held court in his luxurious Manhattan hotel suite to discuss the film, his relationship with real live goats, the upcoming season of Californication and parenthood.

Okay, let's talk about the important stuff first. Can you talk about your relationship with goats?
(Laughs) "My relationship with the actual animal? I’m an animal lover, I would say, although I’m also from New York City, I’m not a nature boy."
Did any of the goats bite you while you were filming?
"They’re not friendly, but they’re not unfriendly. They were very neutral with humans. They are perfectly willing to hang out with you, but it’s not like a dog. You don’t get the feeling that they’re enjoying it. They don’t have anything better to do. And the baby goat was pretty sweet. That was a sweet little creature."
Did you think about keeping any of them?
"Yeah. Whenever I shoot with an animal, I want to keep it. Or whenever I work on location, I want to move there. Then you stop and you forget, and you’re like, 'Ohh. Maybe I don’t really want to live there?'"

Goats was only shot in eight weeks. Was it a fast-paced environment?
"It wasn’t that fast. For a movie of that budget, it was actually quite leisurely. I would think a movie like that would have to be shoot in five weeks, not eight or nine."
Was it a comfortable environment?
"I like a quick pace. I find it makes you worry about the stuff a little less. If you have more time, I tend to over think things. And I think I’m better when I’m not thinking!" (laughs)
Is a fast pace the appeal of doing television?
"No. There’s no appeal with television or film, the appeal is the character or the story or whatever it is you’re doing. I don’t distinguish the acting in either medium, for me they are exactly the same, so it just comes down to the work as an actor. Personally, just temperamentally, I’m suited to working quickly, I like that. I’m not temperamentally suited to spending three days shooting one scene. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, but I tend to go crazy."
You have a scene in Goats where Ellis (Graham Phillip) rides piggyback on the Goat Man. Was that a hard scene to shoot?
"Naw, because he’s not that big. The hard part was carrying him and holding onto the goats at the same time. The goats were actually pretty strong. I liked carrying Graham."

How would you describe the type of parenting that Goat Man gives to Ellis?
"Parenting is a lot of different things. The kind of parenting the Goat Man does is not the nuts and bolts of it. He’s not writing the checks, he’s not making the money, and he’s not driving him to school. But he is imparting some kind of philosophy to the kid and trying to give him the best of what he thinks he has -- what Goat Man has learned. So it’s unconventional for sure. It’s not the prevalent cultural norm, but he is a father to the guy. I think he takes that seriously."
In real life, what kind of dad are you?
"I don’t grow pot. I do the best I can." (laughs)
Are you strict?
"No, I’m pretty lenient. I’m not endlessly patient, either. I can reach my breaking point. I’m fairly lenient, I think. You just love them the best you can. We like each other."
In another scene from Goats, without giving too much away, there's a big hassle between the mother’s boyfriend (Justin Kirk) and Goat Man. It is so serious, Goat Man goes to Mexico and gets himself cleaned up. Can you talk a bit about it?
"He referenced a line which got cut out which was in the film where in the scene where he’s found out that I got involved with the girl, he’s just disappointed in me. He says that Frank is going to have a baby, 'Should I tell Wendy?' The Goat Man says, 'Never withhold and volunteer information.' I wish it was still in the movie as it shows the Goat Man is a kind of philosopher in that way. So I think if that’s your philosophy, I think if she would have asked him, did you see something? He would tell the truth. I really like that about like him. Even though he hates this guy and he thinks he’s bad for Wendy, he’s not going to go tattle. He’s not part of who he is. It’s not his code and I kind of like that code."

Okay, the last time we saw you on Californication, you’re laying on the couch, so you’re dying, maybe…
Obviously, there’s another season on the books, so someone is going to rescue you. Can you talk about what the first five minutes of the new season of Californication might look like?
"They are in Hank’s head as he’s unconscious. They have to do with his life previous to that, what’s important to him. It actually begins with him meeting Karen. You see them meet. I actually got to direct it in New York. I was faced with the fact that I was trying to shoot a scene that happened eighteen years previous."
How did you make yourself look younger?
"We didn’t even try. We just decided, 'Hey it’s a dream. What do you do?' Sure on a (director) David Fincher movie you can figure out a way to spend the money to make that look decent, but we didn’t have the means at our disposal. We just made the decision to not even try anything, let’s just make it the same."

You have a great sense of humor. What jokes were made on the Goats set?
"Graham and I were laughing quite a bit. We would have a good time. I can’t remember specifically a moment. Glow Kids. We laughed a lot about Glow Kids. I was taken by the word. We got obsessed with the word."
What have you laughed about recently?
"Yesterday, I watched the movie and I laughed. I have seen Goats twice and last night -- it’s almost like seeing a play. You watch it at different times and it’s the same performance but for some reason, it strikes you differently. So, last night, I thought Justin Kirk was really funny. I thought he was on fire!"

This inspiring British drama unfolds against the backdrop of rising fascism in Europe and profound social change at home. These included the chauvinistic Professor Gunnell (Gary Lewis, Billy Elliot, Prime Suspect 7), a young feminist desperate to qualify as a vet (Amy Manson, Being Human), and an over privileged young man (Ben Lloyd-Hughes, The Hour, Great Expectations) who didn’t seem to care if he ever graduated.
