article imageIn time for Roald Dahl Day, new e-books released

By Chanah Rubenstein     Sep 13, 2012 in Arts
In celebration of what would have been Roald Dahl’s 96th birthday, eight of his classic stories are being released as e-books for the first time today.
Roald Dahl is one of the world’s most widely known children’s authors; his stories are known across generations. Every year on his birthday, children and children at heart, celebrate Roald Dahl Day; reliving his stories, characters (both loved and hated) and his abundance of made-up words.
Roald Dahl works to be released in e-book form:
James and the Giant Peach
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator
Danny, Champion of the World
George's Marvelous Medicine
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar
Fantastic Mr. Fox
The Twits
Many of his books have been translated into films – sometimes more than once. One of the most well-known of his book-turned-movie was a great disappointment to him. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory became Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Instead of the story being about Charlie, Dahl felt that too much focus was put onto Wonka, reports the BBC. He subsequently turned away from Hollywood after the 1971 movie was released.
Dahl was also a prominent short story writer, delving into the adult macabre scene, known for their twist endings. His adult short story, “Man from the South,” was filmed as an episode in Alfred Hitchcock Presents in 1960 and starred Steve McQueen and Peter Lorre.
Roald Dahl was born on September 13, 1916 in Cardiff, Wales. He died on November 23, 1990 in Oxford, England.
Publishers Weekly states that over 22 million copies of Roald Dahl’s books have been sold worldwide.
