article imageOp-Ed: Emails from Ground Zero Special

By Jimmy Reilly
Sep 11, 2012 in Crime
New York - Few Americans who witnessed the 9.11.01 terror attacks will ever forget what took place that day. It was a day of devastation and loss.
I can never forget the sights and sounds of September 11, 2001. There were scenes of horror and death, but there were also many, many instances of heroism and kindness. Some made the ultimate human sacrifice, giving their lives in the hope of saving the lives of others.
The morning of September 11, 2001 was a picture perfect day. Clear blue skies, cool comfortable temperatures for the people of NY City. The biggest news they were looking at that morning was the primary election for mayor. At 8:46 AM, life changed for everyone. And life in this country took on a whole new identity. We entered a new world that morning.
I was downtown that morning. I was a Blackberry user who loved my new geek device. I'd taken to communicating almost exclusively with that little toy. I had no idea how useful that toy would be that day as I, along with thousands of others, fled NY City, literally running for my life. Below is the transcript from those emails that I was able to send using my Blackberry.
Jim’s e-mails from Sept. 11

accident
Thank God! Above all, remain calm and alert.
Here's what the news is saying: apparently this a coordinated attack on NY and DC (and elsewhere??). Apparently a United Airlines flight from Boston to LA was commandeered and crashed into the Tower. Don't know anything about the first plane. Apparently, an attack was aimed at the Pentagon. There are also reports of attacks on the Washington Mall. FAA has shutdown everything. Keep in touch and get outta there as soon as possible.
