The mother, Jennifer Hipon, of 3 year-old Brooklynn and 2 year-old Devin simply wants her children back safely. Her husband however, is the subject of an arrest warrant by South San Francisco police, presumably for child abduction.
The father whisked the children away from their house before the mother was able to obtain a restraining order against him. On getting the children Maffei put them in a rental car and drove to the Club Nautique harbor in South San Francisco.
The San Mateo County Times
News report that Maffei had been to the harbor two weeks prior to discuss the purchase of the yacht he allegedly stole on Tuesday. The boat is a white Hunter 41, and is sufficient for the area Maffei is apparently in.
A local fisherman has reported spotting the boat today, after the fog in that area had finally cleared off. The Coast Guard is reportedly 'actively searching" for the vessel, but at this time, no plan has been made public for the capture of Maffei and the rescue of the children.
The South San Francisco police intend to defer to the Coast Guard regarding the rescue at sea attempt states spokesman Sgt. Bruce McPhillips:
"The Coast Guard is trained for that. We will defer to the Coast Guard for tactics on that," McPhillips said.
The yacht "Unleashed" has been spotted by a Coast Guard helicopter and was under observation for at least some period of time, and the area of that sighting has Coast Guard vessels en-route to conduct further searches.
Coast Guard spokesman Mike Lutz stated, "...they are able to keep an eye on the craft and are confident that the children have not been harmed."
Lutz also said there should be an update at some time on Friday evening and "I really hope everything goes as planned."
