Toronto - At a news conference yesterday, Toronto Police Service named a suspect in a series of sexual assaults that took place in the downtown area and urged him to get a lawyer and turn himself in.
The suspect was identified as Thomas Reardon, 34, aka Thomas Thornhill. Police believe if he is not taken into custody soon, he will commit further offences.
According to police [PDF], the man met an 18-year-old woman in the Yonge St. and Wellesley St. area around 2 p.m. on Aug. 23. He engaged the woman in conversation and then took her to a nearby apartment building where it is alleged he sexually assaulted her.
The following day, Reardon is alleged to have met a 40-year-old sex worker near the intersection of Dundas and Parliament. He is accused of taking her behind a commercial building and sexually assaulting her.
On Aug. 29, Reardon is alleged to have met a 26-year-old woman in the Yonge St./Gloucester St. area. As with the the Aug. 23 victim, he is accused of taking her to a nearby apartment building and committing a sexual assault.
CP24 reports a fourth victim recently came forward and said she was sexually assaulted in April. She said she was lured to an apartment building by the suspect and sexually assaulted twice. Although separated in time from the other assaults, detectives believe there were enough similarities to link the attack with the August incidents.
In all incidents, the man was able to befriend the victim, usually women who were living on the streets, and convince them to accompany him.
The victims varied in age from 18 to 40 years of age, differed in appearance, and there were differences in the times and places of the various assaults. As well, the assaults range from a touching to intercourse. Police believe the nature of the attacks are escalating.
Detective Constable Sandra Arruda, of the Sex Crimes Unit, is quoted in the Globe and Mail as saying, "We seriously need to get him. I fear he is unpredictable. We have strong beliefs there will be more [attacks]."
Reardon is known to travel around the city by bicycle and was identified from surveillance footage taken near the scenes of the assaults. He is not a suspect in a series of sexual assaults that have recently taken place in the west end of the city.
Reardon is described as being 5' 9" tall and weighing 190 pounds. He has blue eyes and blond hair.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact Arruda at 416-808-7461, the Sex Crimes Unit at 416-808-7474, or Crime Stoppers.
