article imageIowa Senator Tom Harkin (D) gets laugh mileage out of RNC

Charlotte - Politics is not such a bad thing when it's funny and the Democratic Senator from Iowa, Tom Harkin, can raise a guffaw now and again. He managed to do so at a breakfast function for Iowa Democrats at the DNC in Charlotte this morning.
The senator had two pretty useable bon mots, the first about the 82-year-old acting icon - you know it's coming - Clint Eastwood and his rambling and overlong speech at the RNC last week in Tampa. “I mean, how are we ever going to match Clint Eastwood?" a mischievous Harkin asked the morning diners. "I got to thinking he is the perfect icon for today’s Republican tea party: an old angry white man spewing incoherent nonsense.”
Tom Harkin makes Paul Ryan joke
Whether Harkin will catch flak for taking a pejorative jab at Eastwood for his age isn't yet known, though so far there hasn't a backlash. As for his next bit of fun, Harkin choose Mitt Romney's V.P. running mate, Paul Ryan, who of course is fair game. He did not make an objectionable remark, which Romney arguably did when he made what he called a birther "joke" about Obama last week, but one based on Ryan's RNC speech. That speech has been criticized extensively by media and citizens for the number of inaccuracies they feel it contained.
“I was watching his speech, writing a few notes down, and I thought 'my gosh, pretty soon his pants are going to catch on fire.' Anyway, we’re here on a full head of steam.”
The DNC starts today and continues through Thursday.
