Toronto - Today is the first day back to school in Toronto. Sergeant Jack West, Toronto Police Service, has some basic safety tips to make sure it's a fun day!
Parents leading by a positive example are a child's best way to making sure that they know the right way to walk to and from school safely. Don't jay walk, it's one of the most important tips you'll get when it comes to getting to school and home safely.
Know your child's route to school and back home. If they are late you will know where to start looking for them.
Holding your child's hand crossing the street is important and so is making sure that you are crossing the street when it's safe. Obeying the traffic signals is the most important thing when walking your kids.
If you're running late be a little late. Speeding is a recipe for disaster. If the kids miss role call the world won't end.
If you're behind a school bus be patient. West says, "Behind a school bus, take a deep breath, be patient, appreciate that children are being transported."
