article imageAction film star Jason Statham is no longer playing it 'Safe' Special

By Earl Dittman     Aug 30, 2012 in Entertainment
After making a string of hit action flicks ('Crank 1 & 2,' 'Death Race' & 'The Transporter' trilogy), his most recent film, 'Safe,' convinced the British actor to venture outside of his career safety zone and take on a role in the drama/thriller genre.
It was only a mere two decades ago that Englishman Jason Statham was a talented diver on the British National Diving Team (finishing 12th in the World Championships in 1992). These days, though, he's a winner of a different sort. The Derbyshire, UK-born Statham always felt as though he would realize his destiny in the world of sports and athletics. However, life has a strange, unpredictable way of throwing curve balls into everyone's plans for the future. From the moment British director Guy Ritchie cast him as "Bacon" in the 1997 action classic Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels , Statham's fate was sealed and, much to his surprise, he would embark on a journey that would eventually turn him into one of the most popular, top money-making action stars in Hollywood today. "While I was growing up, I never even considered that I could be an actor, much less a popular one," the 44-year-old Statham confesses. "I guess I had a guardian angel in Guy Ritchie. Guy took me off the streets and put me in a movie. After that, my movie career just took off."

With a résumé filled with such shoot 'em up, action/adventure box office hits as Safe, The Mechanic, Death Race, the Crank and The Transporter franchises -- and the recently released sequel, The Expendables 2 -- the muscular and ruggedly handsome Statham has often been compared to a modern day Charles Bronson (Death Wish) and has even been christened the cinematic heir apparent to Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry legacy. Animated, funny and genuinely modest, Statham acknowledges his position in the pantheon of contemporary action stars, but he's adamant the comparison to the four-time Academy Award-winning actor and director doesn’t apply. "Hey, I'm just doin' what I'm doin' with my movies, and I'm chugging away, but you gotta be careful mentioning people as great as Clint Eastwood," Statham declares. "As actors, you can't put me in the same sentence as that man. I don't think I'm quite that good."
Obviously, millions of movie fans and countless filmmakers would disagree. “Jason is really a great actor, he can really do anything he wants to do,” his Safe director, Boaz Yakin (Remember the Titans), explains. “In terms of acting, action movies can be easy for many stars, because there’s a lot of fighting, shooting and killing -- and few words. But, when it comes to portraying real emotions and feelings of a character, Jason is a real pro at it. He’s a natural born actor, that’s why I wanted him for Safe. The role required more than just his physical prowess.”

Statham is given a chance to play a tough character filled with emotional conflict and vulnerability in the adrenaline-charged crime thriller, Safe (available on Blu-ray/DVD, Digital Download and OnDemand beginning September 4, 2012). It’s a very different role for the action star since he usually portrays characters that steadfastly refuse to act vulnerable. Statham, however, was up for the challenge. “When we first started talking about the character of Luke, Boaz (Yakin) was great, he told me, 'You haven't done anything like this before, so you really must acknowledge the fact that this has all the bells and whistles of what you can do well -- but it has so much more underneath,'" Statham remembers. “Flat out, he said, 'It's something we'd love you to do.' I have to say that it's definitely a side I never get to play. You're right, vulnerability is not usually something that's tacked on the front of my scripts -- but I really enjoyed the whole experience of playing Luke the wayI got the chance to. As an actor, I learned a lot about myself by doing this role.”

In Safe, Luke Wright (Statham) was living a normal life as a second-rate mixed martial arts cage fighter until screwing up a rigged fight. The Russian Mafia decides to make an example out of him to prevent this from happening again, and they murder his family. With nothing to live for anymore, Wright wanders the streets of New York -- full of guilt and anger -- until he encounters Mei (Catherine Chan), a frightened 12-year-old Chinese girl. An orphaned math prodigy, Mei had been forced to work for the Triads as a counter and holds the key to a numerical code that could destroy the Triads, the mob and corrupt cops within the N.Y.P.D. After discovering that the same gangsters who killed his family are pursuing her, Wright takes matters into his own hands to protect the innocent girl and seek revenge.
While playing Luke in Safe was a welcomed change of pace for Statham, he says he didn’t have to embark on any character research to portray a man who is homeless and dealing with the death of a spouse. “I've met a lot people who have gone through loss, so I can understand how painful that is,” admits Statham, who stars in the upcoming Taylor Hackford-directed motion picture, Parker, alongside Jennifer Lopez and Michael Chiklis. “And, I've seen a few homeless people in my time. You know, living in London for most of my life, you get to rub shoulders with a few of those people, especially at the early hours. So I'm not completely naive to that world."

Although he is one of the reigning kings of the action genre, Safe reignited a desire within him to venture out and try his hand at acting in a straightforward drama or even a romantic comedy. “Honestly, I'd love to do an interesting film in any genre," he reveals. “Over the years that I’ve been making movies, I’ve been doing the films that just come my way -- and most of them have been action movies. Usually, the filmmaker is the drive behind the films you end up doing. And, to be honest, I really wasn’t in pursuit of doing other types of movies, because things are coming my way in a different way. You have to make a decision. I think if people are interested in seeing you play a particular part and you like the part, the collaboration is immediate. But the success I’ve enjoyed, has given me the chance to try different things. I’ve learned that if you campaign hard enough, you can sort of go after parts you usually don‘t play. After Safe, I decided to do that.”

Statham set his sights on the lead role in the dramatic thriller, Hummingbird, written and directed by fellow Englishman Steven Knight. In Hummingbird (which Statham recently wrapped), Statham portrays a war veteran who reinvents himself as an upper-class Londoner. However, when his wife is murdered, he must embrace his violent past while searching for her killer. “At the moment, I'm doing a really great drama in Hummingbird,’” he says proudly, just weeks before the late spring opening of Safe. “Steven Knight wrote Eastern Promises and Dirty Pretty Things. He's a brilliant, brilliant writer. With Hummingbird, he's written a really, really, dark dramatic film that I’m really enjoying making. Let's just say it’s the biggest departure from all the action movies I've ever had. And, I’m really excited about it, because -- while I love doing action films -- I also want to be thought of as a serious actor. I mean, you have to roll the dice sometimes to go after what you want. With Hummingbird, I think I’ve picked a winner, regardless of how much money it makes. It’s helping me become a better actor. I think that’s not only good for me, but for the fans who come see my movies. We all come out winners.”
Visiting New York City this past April, in anticipation of the release of Safe, Statham also discussed what it takes to get in shape for an action picture, what it was like working opposite a child actress and how he enjoyed making The Expendables 2 with such veterans action heroes as Sly Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Do you always have to stay physically fit for the action roles you play?
"You have to be in shape, because injuries happen far too often -- and be as resilient as your body can be to those oncoming injuries, because they're gonna come. You know, the stronger you are, the less chance they have of affecting you. So yeah, you really have to concentrate and throw a bit of dedication into the mix. So, I always get down to the gym and do some training. Get ready, and don't go out. Stop boozing! And then you'll be okay."
Do you have your very own regimen?
"It's not so much a regimen. We work with an action crew and it varies so much, which makes it interesting. If you do the same thing all the time, it'll drive you to boredom."
What was the biggest physical challenge in doing Safe?
"If there's one punch you miss, you had to go back and do it again. So it can be very...tiring. But I liked the subway fight, and all the nasty thugs that ensue. It was very inventive and quite painful for a few stuntmen."

What was it like working with the young actress who plays Mei -- Catherine Chan?
"I love it when they have a very young girl who acts really grownup. There's something quite odd about it -- you talk to them like a grownup and they talk to you like a grownup. But that's when the chemistry comes -- and it really works."
So, what was it like acting opposite Catherine?
"We had to meet in a very adult sort of way. I think that's what makes the relationship sweet, you know? Like I mentioned, she's a young girl, but she's way above her years. I think that's what makes it special -- we talk to each other in a very simple way. You know, it makes it very sweet, and it works really well, When they cast the film, we had a little get together beforehand and do a little rehearsal. But Boaz is a very experienced filmmaker. He does the things he needs to give her the confidence she needs. It works that way. But whoever you're working with, you feed off each other's sort of energy. If it's a good one, which it was, it works really well. You know, you're only as good as the person you're opposite. I'm afraid that's the truth."
Do you think of your character of Luke Wright as dark?
"This guy? Yeah, but in the end he leaves the position he's in, because he doesn't like the corruption around him. He leaves for a wholesome reason, and then he does things that he's not really proud of. But I don't think he's as dark as any of the people that he ends up straightening out. I mean, he does go to a place where he's almost about to kill himself. But everything that meant anything to him was taken away. So for sure, he was in a very dark place."

Do you relate to him personally -- at all?
"No! I'm never gonna go there. I'm normally on the safe side of the fence. And, you know, never to the point of throwing in the towel."
How do you prep to play somebody like Luke Wright?
"It's all about talking with the director about all the different points that you're going to get stuck into. Obviously, there's the physical choreography that has to take place."
How much fun is it clobbering bad guys all the time?
"People want to see these people meet their maker." (laughs)
You do lots of different things in Safe -- to catch us off guard, don't you?
"Yeah, I do. (laughs) My hat is well and truly tipped for Boaz, because he is the writer and the editor. And, at the end of the day, he is the director. He is the man who puts the story together. So the construction of where and when these moments happen are very much in his control. He seems like he did the right thing."

Some of the funnier moments in the film seems strictly like they are your own brand of humor. Nobody can write that. So, did you do some humorous adlibbing?
"Ha! We said a few funny things, and a lot of it, I was told, ‘That was terrible.’ (laughs) But some things did stick. I will say, Boaz is quite a funny writer, and he's responsible for all of the humor. But the delivery, obviously, I have to take care of. But yeah, the humor is in the writing."
Did people think you were a funny guy before you started making movies?
"I don't know? But the Guy Ritchie movies I did, he has a certain wit with a pen. He made me funny. You know, a lot of that sort of straightly played humor seems to have a place. I quite like that kinda stuff."
Is there less pressure going solo in a movie like Safe than when you're with a bunch of other action stars like you are in The Expendables 2?
"God, yeah, I suppose. With both The Expendables movies, you've got such a massive, brilliant group of action stars -- who have made some of the greatest action movies of all time. So you're in for the ride with those people. And in a movie like Safe, I'm on my own. Yeah, I'm screwed!" (laughs)
How was it teaming up with Sly Stallone again for The Expendables 2?
"He was very chilled out. Yeah. Sly had a great time on this one. Actors just come in and go out. But for a director, it's a few years of their bloody lives. It's a real big gig."
Would you say that The Expendables 2 is also a bit of a martial arts movie?
"It's very difficult to not make an action movie become a martial arts movie. Because if you do a roundhouse kick, or if you do something too fancy, you know it won't really fit for the character. So you're restricted by what the character and his background dictates."

When you first started making movies, was all this martial arts action stuff new to you?
"Nah, I'd done kick boxing, and I've done a bit of regular hand boxing. My dad also used to box. So I have a little experience in, you know, throwing a punch."
Did you have to learn anything new for this movie?
"You know what, there's not a lot of time. They keep me very busy. Yeah. But I work with a group of people in LA who have experience in martial arts, like you wouldn't believe. For instance, they know and have studied it -- relentlessly -- for years and years. So, I'm working with them even when I'm not filming. I'm working with them when I am filming. So I'm absorbing and taking it all on board, all the experience I can. So it's great. It's a real passion. And that's another reason I tend to gravitate to doing these films, because I really have a fascination for martial arts."

You've been called this generation's Charles Bronson by many critics. Is that something you embrace or dislike?
"Ha! It's an extremely, very gracious compliment. But God knows how much truth is in that."
Are you ever nervous about your movies doing well at the box office?
"Nah, I mean, if it doesn't work, you've got to find another job!" (laughs)

Screaming in High Heels: Rise and Fall of the Scream Queen Era
Three girls living in Los Angeles, CA, in the 1980s, found cult fame when they "accidentally" transitioned from models to B-movie actresses, coinciding with the major direct-to-video horror film boom of the era. Known as "The Terrifying Trio," Linnea Quigley (The Return of the Living Dead), Brinke Stevens (The Slumber Party Massacre) and Michelle Bauer (The Tomb), headlined upwards of ten films per year, fending off men in rubber monster suits, pubescent teenage boys, and deadly showers. They joined together in campy cult films like Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama (1988) and Nightmare Sisters (1987). They traveled all over the world, met President Reagan, and built mini-empires of trading cards, comic books, and model kits. Then it all came crashing down. This documentary remembers these actresses -- and their most common collaborators -- on how smart they were to play stupid.
