Hollywood – Kids have loved it for more than sixty years, and its popularity has inspired theme parks, video games and more. So it shouldn't be a shock that there's a feature film in development about everybody's favourite Danish toy: LEGO.
And Warner Bros. is making progress at – if you'll excuse the pun – putting all of the pieces together.
Deadline: New York reported yesterday that the planned 3D animated comedy-adventure, tentatively titled
Lego: The Piece of Resistance, will feature the voices of actors Morgan Freeman and Elizabeth Banks. Also starring will be Chris Pratt and Will Arnett, the latter as LEGO Batman. (Channing Tatum has been offered the role of LEGO Superman.)
Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who directed the recent movie adaptation of
21 Jump Street, are slated to co-direct the movie (along with
Robot Chicken's Chris McKay) from their own script. The pair shares story credit with Dan and Kevin Hageman.
According to
Variety, Pratt will play a LEGO character named Emmet, an ordinary Joe who gets mistaken for the “MasterBuilder” and stumbles into a fellowship determined to stop a villain's plot. “Basically, [it's about] the least qualified LEGO characters in the universe having to keep the world from being frozen together,” Lord and Miller told
Slash Film in March. They have also described the movie's style as “like if Michael Bay kidnapped Henry Selick to make a movie for him”.
Freeman reportedly will play a character named Vitruvius.
The movie is scheduled for release on February 28, 2014, as
Variety announced in April. It is planned as a hybrid of animation and live action, with Australian firm
Animal Logic creating the CGI animation that will take up about four-fifths of the movie.
Warner has been developing the movie since 2008.
