Schoep the dog, made famous by a viral photo on Facebook, is still undergoing laser treatment and his pain is greatly reduced. 'I almost got a bark out of him a few nights ago,' says Unger.
Digital Journal recently reported that Schoep, the now famous 19-year-old arthritic dog owned by John Unger, was undergoing laser treatment, thanks to the generous donations received after a photo of the two of them went viral on Facebook.
Unger and Schoep were captured in a beautiful photo by photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson of Stonehouse Photography, taking a therapeutic evening swim in Lake Superior. The warmth of the water soothed Schoep's pain and helped him to sleep.
On Tuesday, Unger updated their Facebook page with the message, "He's doing great! He is happier, wagging his tail even harder and faster now. He also loves his new tempur-pedic dog bed, a gift sent to him from a friend. He sleeps so much better."
The video above shows Schoep undergoing his fifth laser treatment at the Bay Area Animal Hospital in Ashland, Wisconsin, with Sarah D. Myers, DVM. Myers says that Schoep an excellent patient and most dogs do not behave so well when undergoing the treatment.
"Schoep is moving faster, holding his head up higher, even his ears are standing up more and more." says Unger, "He's faster, I almost got a bark out of him a few nights ago."
Talking about the treatments, Myers says, "Schoep had three treatments the first week, two this week, one next week."
Dr. Erik Haukaas DVM reports, "Schoep is much more active and alert since we started his treatments. His pain is greatly reduced, and he is moving around easier. We are planning on continuing his therapy laser treatments on a weekly basis, and his other medications/supplements as needed."
