article imageJennifer Lawrence reveals her soul mate from 'The Hunger Games' Special

By Earl Dittman     Aug 16, 2012 in Entertainment
Almost overnight, the worldwide success of the film based on the novel, The Hunger Games, has transformed Lawrence into a movie star. Jennifer discusses her initial hesitancy about the film adaptation, but explains why she had to play the lead character.
Jennifer Lawrence, the 22-year-old star of the film The Hunger Games, looks stunningingly gorgeous in a black Theory blazer, a Tory Birch striped shirt, tight blue jeans and tall, sexy stilettos as she talks about her participation in the massive box office hit. It's early March and Lawrence is spending this particularly cool and sunny Los Angeles day holed-up in one of the City of Angels' more posh and luxurious hotels, speaking to members of the national and international press -- just weeks before the film's opening. Surprisingly, almost immediately after we began our chat, Lawrence revealed an astounding admission when asked how she felt when she -- a self-admitted longtime, hardcore fan of The Hunger Games novels -- first discovered that bestselling author Suzanne Collins's book was being turned into a major motion picture.
"I do have to say that when I heard that they were turning The Hunger Games into a movie, my first thought was, ‘Great! Here’s another book that Hollywood will screw up, " Lawrence candidly confessed, followed by a huge grin. Of course, after landing the lead role of Katniss Everdean and filming the celluloid adaptation of The Hunger Games (available on Blu-ray and DVD on August 18), her opinion naturally changed. "I couldn’t have been more wrong about Hollywood screwing this one up, because we didn’t," the Oscar-nominated actress (for Winter's Bone) admitted. "Everyone involved in this film was a fan of the books. We vowed not to make a watered down version of a great story."
Although she was initially worried about how The Hunger Games would turn out as a film, Lawrence was still determined to be a part of it -- relentlessly going after the role of Katniss. "The real reason that I wanted to do the movie was because this role was just me," the Kentucky-born actress explained. "It was a little bit like Katniss and I were soul mates."

The Hunger Games is the first in a trilogy of books that had already become a literary phenomenon with over 36.5 million copies in circulation. The big screen version is set in the future, where one male and one female from each of the twelve districts of the nation is forced to participate in the annual competition called The Hunger Games, which is broadcast live throughout the country for the entertainment of the Capitol’s wealthy residents. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) volunteers in her younger sister’s place to enter the games, and is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy when she’s pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.
Directed by Academy Award-nominee Gary Ross (Seabiscuit), The Hunger Games features an ensemble cast that also includes Golden Globe-winner Donald Sutherland (Citizen X), Stanley Tucci (The Lovely Bones), Woody Harrelson (The People vs. Larry Flynt), Lenny Kravitz (Precious) and Elizabeth Banks (30 Rock), as well as up-and-coming actors Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are All Right) and Liam Hemsworth (The Expendables 2). A Number One film for four consecutive weeks, The Hunger Games (the first of a planned film franchise) has already grossed nearly $400 million in North American theaters and is quickly approaching the $650 million at the worldwide box office (a number that doesn't include its opening in China this past June).

Since its release, The Hunger Games has transformed Lawrence -- a relative newcomer to Tinsel Town, with films such as X-Men: First Class and Like Crazy under her proverbial belt -- into a major superstar and Hollywood celebrity. Furthermore, it has also turned the role of Katniss Everdean (who Jennifer refers to as "...a futuristic Joan of Arc") into one of the most iconic female characters to hit the silver screen in the past decade. However, even before The Hunger Games had opened, Lawrence wasn't overly concerned with how the overnight success of the film would affect her life -- professionally or personally. "I've read the stories on me that the heat on me is too hot, too fast and too soon," said Lawrence, who is preparing to begin filming the second film of the cinematic trilogy, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (scheduled for release in late-2013). "I mean, when you get a promotion at your job, you never say, ‘That was too fast. Can I stay in the mailroom?’ You take it gratefully. As for me, I haven’t thought about how this will affect my life except in the negative sense. But, I’m as ready as I can be...but mostly, I’m clueless," she added with laugh.
In addition to explaining her feelings about playing Katniss, Lawrence, who is slated to reprise her role as Raven/Mystique in the upcoming sequel X-Men: Days Of Future Past, also discussed why she had a little trouble pretending she was in love with costar Josh Hutcherson, talked about how her Kentucky roots helped her out when the shooting of The Hunger Games moved to the woods of North Carolina, why she decided to film The Silver Linings Playbook with director David O. Russell and her feelings about becoming an overnight sensation.

Did The Hunger Games director Gary Ross hire you on the basis of your Oscar nomination for your role in Winter’s Bone or did you campaign for the role?
"Hell yes, I was competitive about it. (laughs) I knew that Gary was talking with other young women. But, for me, it has nothing to do with being a better actor. I’m not better than those other girls. I wanted to play Katniss, because I really understood the character. Like I said earlier, we are soul mates."
Do you like playing characters that are a lot like you -- personally?
"It’s a risky thing when you pick roles that remind you of you. I never play roles based just on me because I’m a boring person. I’d never want to see me in a movie. With Katniss, it was just a sense of understanding. I knew I could read the lines and say them without forcing anything. I could speak as this character. There are a lot of scripts where I simply can’t find those words. There are no way those words can come out of my mouth and feel natural. Katniss is a girl I can understand."

Do you think that Katniss realizes she is a power young woman?
"Katniss is stronger than she knows. She starts out in the film thinking she’s a bit cold, but she’s actually a lot nicer and warmer than she thinks, too. She thinks of herself as a hunter and never focused on trying to get people to like her. Before having to go off to The Hunger Games, she’s just surviving. Her father is gone. Her mother has a breakdown and Katniss is just trying to feed her family. Eventually, she’s put in a position of saving her people and her family. She becomes a symbol of revolt and goes for it. She realizes she’s a symbol and fights like a futuristic Joan of Arc."
How would you describe Katniss' mixed feelings for both Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth)?
"Her feelings for Peeta are confusing. She does love him and wants a person with her in the games. But I think she gets confused about what’s real and what’s for TV during this fight for survival. If you have a higher sense of surviving by being in love with someone then you do it."
Josh Hutcherson as Peeta in The Hunger Games
Josh Hutcherson as Peeta in 'The Hunger Games'
Is it true that it was tough for you to pretend that you were in love with Josh while filming the movie?
"Yeah, a little. The problem was my chemistry with Josh. In real life, we have that annoying brother and sister thing going. We’ll fight about who is on the face of a ten-dollar bill. That’s our crack down fight. We play with each other like cats, clawing at each other. That’s not the chemistry you hope to find between two lovers. That was a problem for (director) Gary Ross."
How did you feel about shooting a lot of the film in the woods?
"I’m from Kentucky and grew up in the woods, but Josh Hutcherson is also from Kentucky. I called Josh the real redneck. He’s a bigger hick than me." (laughs)
Did growing up in Kentucky influence the way you approached the role of Katniss?
"I drew on it. Even the other day, I said to a friend here in Los Angeles, ‘You mean, you didn’t grow up with any woods? Where did you fall out of trees and build a fort?’ For a long time, I said my Kentucky upbringing had nothing to do with my character of Katniss. The truth is, I grew up riding horses and racing through the trees. I was more prepared than someone who was from, let’s say, New Jersey."

Physically, what was filming The Hunger Games in North Carolina like for you?
"It was physically exhausting. There was a lot of training including running. I did a ton of climbing, plus combat work -- including archery. I even did yoga to prepare for the role. I did as many of the stunts as I could. Of course, the studio wasn’t too big on having their lead actress at the beginning of a franchise roll out of trees and fall down mountains. For the most part, the stunts I didn’t do were ones where I said, ‘No, thank you.’"
Was it all hard work for you filming the actual games?
(Laughs) "There were some funny moments. Actually, it was so hot that a lot of girls were passing out. At least three hours a day was taken up by rain. We just had to wait in the shade."
And what about the bears and turkeys?
"Oh yeah, there were bears there and lots of them -- including mothers and baby bears. There were also wild turkeys, who were funny. We had an assistant director who had to run around and scare the turkeys away. But after awhile, they weren’t scared of him anymore."

At the beginning of your career, where you hesitant about leaving home in Louisville (Kentucky) to become an actress in New York City?
"A little."
Didn't you get a lot of modeling gigs when you first got there?
"I did. I was shooting commercials for MTV and H&M. I remember when I first hit New York City, I loved it so much. I was 14 and wearing my brand new Forever 21 boots. There, I was storming the sidewalks knowing where I was going. It just seemed like home."
How do you feel about now living in Los Angeles?
"I have to be honest that it took me a while to call it home. It took me years to like it. It’s just hard to find good, normal, nice people to call friends. Plus, I don't have a lot of hang time."

In The Silver Linings Playbook, the motion picture you just filmed with director David O Russell (and scheduled for release later this year), you reportedly play an ex-sex addict. What was that whole experience like?
"I was cracking up when I read the script, plus it was hilarious to work with David. I have a strong reaction to everything he has ever done."
Are you proud of everything you've done so far?
"Yeah, I’ve wanted to do the most I could with my movies. I’m lucky that I don’t have to say, ‘There is a lot of crap in there.’"

Seriously, are you really ready for how the success of The Hunger Games will change your life?
"I don’t want to think about me. I’d rather think about how this movie will affect young girls. Maybe it will make them feel more powerful, which is the goal. Yes, I get to be this character. She’s an amazing, iconic character. But when I drive by the big posters (along Sunset Blvd.), I still get goosebumps. Of course, I do hope to do other movies where I’m not Katniss. I hope it’s not going to be, ‘Oh look, Katniss is doing a period drama. Katniss looks so stupid in a hoop skirt.’"

Fans of classic animation, or anyone who watched Saturday morning cartoons, are sure to enjoy this series based on the timeless Heathcliff comic strip about a wily cat who loves lasagna and terrorizing his neighborhood. The feline half of the show is pure classic Heathcliff high jinks, with the highfalutin’ low-livin’ tomcat living the life while romancing Sonja, avoiding the dog-catcher and tormenting Spike. And as an added soupcon of catnip, Heathcliff is voiced by the legendary man of 1,000 voices, Mel Blanc! Meanwhile, a dog heads up the second half, but this is no common canine. Dingbat is a vampire dog, who with fellow Creeps the fat skeleton Sparerib and teamleader Nobody, a talking jack-o-lantern, makes up the strangest service biz ever seen, Odd Jobs, Inc. So grab a seat and get ready for the funniest antics this side of alleyway and graveyard. ON THE NET: For your own copy of The Heathcliff and Dingbat Show head to
