article imageMarvin Hamlisch was member of the EGOT club but list needs update

By Tim O'Brien     Aug 7, 2012 in Entertainment
Los Angeles - As news spread that Marvin Hamlisch passed away at the age of 68, so did this tidbit. He won and Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and a Tony Award. In the business, that would be called EGOT.
Before this story moves on, it can also be GATE (or Grand Slam), with the "A" taking the place of Oscar by using Academy. However, when examining this unusual feat, one must take a step back and take a breather.
The item that has been stated multiple times is that "he is one of 11 artists to have accomplished" this feat. Now, off the top of the head, one would first go to Rita Moreno and Barbra Streisand in that list. Then, one can fill in the gaps.
Not so fast. That list has a curve ball since Streisand would make the list of three that have done so, but since one of them is a special or an honorary award, she would not make the final list. Huh? Also not making the final list would be Liza Minnelli and James Earl Jones. The special or honorary award for Streisand was the Tony; Minnelli, Grammy and Jones, Oscar. So, to that list, they do not count.
Hamlisch passed away in Los Angeles after a brief illness and is best known for his work on "A Chorus Line,' "The Sting" and "The Way We Were." His awards are numerous and his work will be forever etched in the memories of many people's lives. For a full story, head here.
Now then, who are those 11?
1. Helen Hayes
2. John Gielgud
3. Audrey Hepburn
4. Rita Moreno
5. Mel Brooks
6. Whoopi Goldberg
7. Mike Nichols
8. Richard Rodgers
9. Marvin Hamlisch
10. Jonathan Tunick
11. Scott Rudin
Those wins are all in the competitive categories, so many stories go with the 11 number. Add in Streisand, Minnelli and Jones and the number is 14.
Let's go with that number.
