London - The Canadian born and British Columbia native hits a speed bump during triathlon that causes him to crash. Whitfield did not finish the race.
Favouritable Canadian Olympic athlete hits a speed bump on the road during the triathlon event. Whitfield disappointed in the events did not continue, instead he received medical treatment for minor injuries.
Before Simon Whitfield got on his bike to ride, he just finished a grueling 1km.5 swim. Getting out of the pool Whitfield was in 15th position. He was looking to ride towards the front pack of Olympic athletes. That is when Whitfield hit a literal speed bump on the bike trail.
Whitfield told CBC Sports "the crash came down to a matter of bad timing." Triathlete Whitfield is no stranger to finding success in this event in previous Olympic Games. He has been on the podium in past events winning a gold medal in the 2000 Sydney Summer Games and that first place finish was than followed up by capturing a silver medal in 2008 Beijing Games.
Although Whitfield did not finish today's race he says in short that his a very proud Canadain, he adds that he has had two very successful Olympics and that is nothing to be ashamed about.
