London - Canada's Mary Spencer suffered an upset in the boxing ring today at the hands of China's Li Jinzi as the women strapped on the 8 oz. gloves in the 75 KG weight class.
In the first round, Spencer had an explosive start, winning the round 3 points to 2. Although she said she set the pace for the rest of the fight, she woke up Li Jinzi.
Li made a statement in the second round, as she was the more aggressive of the two. She threw and landed more punches, and her efforts were not lost on the scorecards. Going into the third round, Li was up on points 7-5.
As the third round got underway, exhaustion was starting to set in. No one took advantage of scoring in the third. Even more so, Li was deducted two points for holding too much.
Going into the fourth and final round the score said it all. The scorecards read 10-8 in favour of Li.
In the final round, Li looked to be the busier of the two fight. She took the round 7-6. With the victory over Spencer, Li moved onto the medal round, ending Spencer's Olympic dream.
