article imageWestboro Baptist Church chimes in quickly in Sikh shooting

By KJ Mullins     Aug 5, 2012 in Crime
Oak Creek - The news about a shooting at the Sikh Temple just outside of Milwaukee in Oak Creek, Wisconsin was just airing when Margie Phelps of Westboro Baptist Church took to Twitter, "God sent another shooter?"
Three hours later the daughter of Westboro's Pastor Fred Phelps, Jr. followed up with five additional Tweets, one saying that the church warned people to 'stop proud sinning' on June 30.
Jonathon Phelps also posted about the shooting on Twitter beginning with Did I just say #GodSentTheShooter?!? I did. Check out this Video for more: http://telly.com/EQTO8 "
The 'church' is known for their hate against any religion or behaviour that goes against theirs. They became famous for protesting military funerals and funerals of famous people. The group has been allowed by a recent Supreme Court ruling to be able to protest outside of military funerals. They are planning on protesting in Palm Bay, Florida later this week.
At about 10:35 a.m. the first call came in to 9-1-1 about the shooting, with the violence still in process. While the rampage was going on women and children hid in closets at the temple. The worshipers were at the temple for Asa-di Var, the Sunday morning prayer. The temple often has hundreds of people on its grounds on Sunday to take part in the midday lunch.
Early reports say that the shooter was a white man or a group of men. One shooter was killed by the police.
Police have not confirmed if there were multiple shooters. A search is underway on the grounds which includes 13 acres to locate any other possible suspects.
Seven people have been reported to have died at the temple. According to unconfirmed reports on Twitter the first person shot this morning was a young boy. Three people are in critical condition according to local media.
The temple was opened on October 1, 1997 with less than 25 families in a rental building. They moved to their current location on South Howell Avenue in 2007.
