According to the Akron police, John Wise walked into the ICU at the Akron General Medical Center and shot his wife. She is listed in critical condition.
Police say that Wise, 66, entered the intensive care unit shortly before 9 o'clock last night. He walked up to the beside of his wife, Barbara, 65, pulled out a gun, and shot her once. According to Channel 5 News, Barbara had been in the ICU for a few days and was suffering from a life-threatening condition.
The couple from Massillon, Ohio have been married for 45 years. John was booked into the Summit County Jail and faces a charge of attempted aggravated murder.
Fox News Cleveland interviewed Jim Gosky, a spokesman for the Akron General Medical Center. According to Gosky, one of the doctors present in the ICU engaged Wise in conversation while the man was still holding the gun in his hand. The doctor, whose actions have been called "heroic," managed to converse with Wise until hospital security arrived and took him into custody.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Gosky said, "One could speculate that it could have been much worse. It appears that he was just there to inflict violence on his wife and no one else but we don't know that for sure."
Police have not yet come up with a motive for the shooting. Wise is expected to appear in court on Monday when he will be arraigned on the charge of attempted aggravated murder.
