Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has extended his Internet credentials by joining photo sharing site Instagram. Already a hit on Twitter the Ayatollah has now been spending his free time uploading photos to Instagram.
Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei may be the religious leader of the Islamic Republic but he's not short of hobbies either. Alarbiya reported the 73-year-old Shi'ite leader, whom Forbes placed at number 26 in its list of the world's most powerful people, has amassed 757 followers thus far on Instagram.
To date the Ayatollah has uploaded five photographs to the site, primarily featuring himself attending prayer meetings. In one photograph the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad can be seen in the background.
The Ayatollah has certainly performed a remarkable feat by uploading his pictures considering a reoport earlier this week circulated the rumour that he was dead. According to Belief Net rumours were rife in the bazaars of Tehran that the spiritual leader had passed away. Iranian bloggers described an “abnormal atmosphere in the city” which was linked to the Ayotallah's passing.
The rumours also gained ground on Twitter, the social networking site which Khameni is also a member of, boasting 5,000 followers. It seems that the rumours were simply that as evidenced by Khameni's latest interest in photography, not to mention the absence of flailing in grief on the streets of Iran.
