The director of "The Matrix" has become the first major Hollywood director to declare publicly as a transgender person. Lana Wachowski made her first public appearance, since transitioning, in a trailer for her new movie "Cloud Atlas."
The New York Post reports that the movie "Cloud Atlas", is based on a science fiction novel by British author David Mitchell and stars Tom Hanks and Halle Berry.
According to The Huffiington Post, Lana has been transitioning for years and the new trailer for "Cloud Atlas" is her first public appearance since transitioning. In the trailer, Lana introduces the film with her brother Andy Wachowski, and director Tom Tyker.
According to the New York Post, Lana Wachowski in pink dreadlocks and gray dress, speaking in a German accent, introduced herself, saying: "Hi, I am Lana."
The NY Post reports it is unclear whether her sex change is complete but she says she has been transitioning from male to female for years.
Rumors about Wachowski's sex life and identity have circulated since 2002. The Huffington Post reports that in 2002, Wachowski's divorce from Thea Bloom made headlines. Bloom filed for divorce after Wachowski was photographed in a notorious Los Angeles S&M club, The Dungeon. The San Francisco Chronicle reports the two divorced in 2002 after nine years of marriage.
In 2003, media reports revealed Wachowski was a "cross dresser." According to People, Wachowski also raised eyebrows at the L.A. premiere of The Matrix Reloaded when she appeared with a woman said to be a dominatrix who used to run an S&M web site. During the same year, the Gothamist reported Wachowski was undergoing "sex change." Gothamist columnist Dave Poland, reported: "Every indication I have says that Larry Wachowski is now in the process of changing his sex. Dressing in public like a woman, taking female hormones and yes, having a sex change operation."
Jeffrey Wells, writing in Movie Poop Shoot, commented on the revelation: "I don't think of myself as a bigot or a jerk, but I do feel turned around by the Larry thing. It's a creaky old sentiment, but whatever lights your fire is okay by me. It's just that I've always thought of filmmakers who are into martial-arts sequences and comic-book inspirations and Japanimation as... I don't know, a little bit geeky and dorky in a kind of routinely male, vaguely grungy, non-glammy sort of way. And I don't know where to put the Larry thing. It doesn't seem to fit..."
Wachowski is not the first transgender to transition under public scrutiny. Against Me! singer Tom Gabel, recently changed identity to Laura Jane Grace. Grace remains married to her wife Heather and they have a daughter, The Huffington Post reports.
