article imageChicago clothing store falls victim to teen 'flash mob' robbery

By Andrew Moran     Jul 30, 2012 in Crime
Chicago - A Chicago clothing store owner recently published security footage on YouTube showing a flash mob of nearly two dozen teenagers filling the store and then stealing approximately $3,000 worth of jeans.
When news reports are filed relating to flash mobs, they are usually about something positive, such as senior citizens dancing in Virginia or the promotion of a certain cause in the Netherlands. However, one story reported over the weekend has the Chicago area stunned.
During the Wicker Park Fest, approximately 20 teenagers began to flood the Mildblend Supply Co., a fashion boutique located on Milwaukee Avenue, at around 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Once he realized that something was wrong, owner Luke Cho locked the front door, which prevented even more teenagers from entering the store.
Within four to five minutes, the suspects, who acted as if they were browsing, distracted the staff and began to rob the store by packing their bags with jeans. The owner told the Chicago Sun-Times that the young men assaulted the staff, who ended up with cuts and bruises, and were able to break through the locked front door. It took the police about half an hour to reach the store.
By the time the thievery was over, the culprits ran away with $3,000 worth of clothing, including $200 pairs of Nudie Jeans.
“We were extremely vulnerable and caught completely off guard,” said the store owner. “There wasn’t a whole lot we could do other than lock the door and hope the police showed up right away.” He posted the video on YouTube along with a note: “If you recognize anybody in this video, please call Chicago police at 312-744-8290. Police report No. HV-404817.”
As of Sunday, there have been no reports of any arrests made.
In recent months, more youth-related flash mob robberies have taken place.
Earlier this month, roughly 300 partying teenagers took over a Jacksonville Walmart and wreaked havoc by stealing items and throwing produce around. Last summer, a group of kids looted a Dallas convenience store.
