article imageThe mystery girl in the Indian Olympic contingent

For close to 48 hours, the Indian authorities were clueless on an unanticipated appearance of an unidentified girl in the Indian contingent walking next to the flag bearer Sushil Kumar for the entire lap of the Olympic stadium during the opening ceremony.
The girl was seen wearing a red jacket and turquoise blue tights while the entire contingent wore yellow giving the impression that the athlete had not been given her uniform.
The Indian chef de mission PKM Raja lambasted the organizing committee on Saturday. “It was an eyesore and she spoilt the entire Indian march past. Before entering the arena, the identity card of each Indian athlete and official was checked by security. I think there should be an inquiry into how this lapse took place and the LOCOG has to explain to India,” said Raja speaking to Mail Today.
According to Raja, there was another man with her outside the stadium who did not enter the stadium. “I have been getting phone calls from the world over as to how someone just walked along with the contingent and looked out of sync with our dress code. It’s very irritating,” Raja added.
However, it took 48 hours and the Deccan Chronicle report for the suspense of the mystery girl to end.
The girl who gate-crashed India’s march past has been identified as Madhura Honey, according to a Deccan Chronicle Report, quoting unnamed friends of the girl.
The same report quoted Raja as saying that the incident had “embarrassed us in front of the whole world”.
Before the Olympic opening ceremony, according to the reports, Madhura used her Face Book account to flaunt her pass. However, once the controversy exploded, she deactivated her account.
According to BBC, India already disappointed with the truncated TV coverage, is seeking apology from the London organizers for the security lapse. “This was bizarre. We will ask for an apology,” said Raja speaking to the Times of India.
“Indian contingent was shown just for 10 seconds and to think this lady hogged all the lime light,” said Raja adding “When we were entering the stadium, a member of the organising committee or some security guy asked to be in front of us. We thought the woman was part of Locog.
“When we entered the stadium, the woman who was walking between us and the contingent ahead of us, the Independent Olympic Athletes, suddenly came back and started walking next to Sushil Kumar, our flag-bearer.
“We are totally surprised by the manner in which she joined the delegation and kept walking inside the stadium,” he said.
According to Deccan Chronicle sources, Madhura Honey, a post-graduate from Bangalore surprised her friends with her appearance in the Indian Olympic contingent. She had been living in London, but how she gate-crashed into the stadium is still a mystery.
Meanwhile the London Olympic organizers have said that they will be releasing a statement soon.
