Olympics' security is again being called into question after a woman joined the Indian delegation for the Parade of Athletes at the Opening Ceremonies.
India's Olympic officials are reacting with embarrassment and anger after the woman walked with the team athletes into London's stadium during the ceremonies. The gatecrasher wearing red and blue stood out in stark contrast to the rest of the team dressed in yellow as she marched alongside flag bearer wrestler Sushil Kumar.
Indian Olympic Association vice president Tarlochan Singh tells
Reuters, "How did they allow her in? It was a security lapse. Nobody knows who she was. She looks like an Indian." "She walked along in the front line. Her dress was totally different. She was not wearing an identity card. This should have been noticed at an earlier stage but nobody bothered."
The woman who has now been identified as post-graduate student Madhura Honey from Bangalore.
The
Times of India reports an angry Brig PKM Raja, acting Chef-de-Mission says, "We will ask for an apology. She embarrassed us in front of the world. The Indian contingent was shown for just 10 seconds, and to think this lady hogged all the limelight."
There's no official word yet from Olympic organizers or from the gatecrasher.
