The Twitter account @BarackObama, the account of U.S. President Barack Obama of course, is not only the world's most followed politician Twitter account, it's one of the most followed in the world, period. He has more followers than Kim Kardashian.
Burson-Marsteller, the global communications and public relations
firm with offices in New York and arond the world, released an analysis of Twitter accounts and governments Thursday and found there are 264 government Twitter accounts in 125 countries. Of all of those accounts, Barack Obama leads in number of Twitter followers with 17.8 million.

That number not only puts him atop the politician Twitter leaderboard but in sixth place overall on the list of people with the
most Twitter followers. The U.S. President is behind Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Rihanna and Britney Spears and ahead of Shakira, Taylor Swift and Kardashian, who's in ninth.
The most popular tweet ever from a world leader was Obama's on Gay marriage. That May 9th tweet from his campaign team - he signs the ones he sends personally, otherwise they were sent by campaign people - quoted Obama saying that "same-sex couples should be able to get married." It has been re-tweeted over 62,000 times, the record for world leader re-tweets.
