A few hours before he left Israel, I had a chance to talk to Tom and follow up on our previous interview for Digital Journal
So, Tom how do you feel?
Great, just great. Things have been very busy as you know but the energy is positive and I feel excited about the whole thing.
Tell me what you’ve been up to the last few days.
Well it’s been hectic but a lot of fun too. On Saturday we had our official leaving party in Tel Aviv. About 350 people attended including internationally known Israeli singers and musicians, David Broza and Daniel Salomon. The atmosphere was great, and we managed to raise about US$4000 from that event alone.
What’ve you been doing today on your last day in Israel?
Not packing that’s for sure! We drove down to Sede Boker
in the Negev to have a meeting and biking event with Taglit Birthright Israel
. We’re just on our way back from there. That was amazing. Over a hundred of us cycled from Ben Gurion’s tomb to Sede Boker, where we went to Ben Gurion’s house and I made a presentation about BFF.
So you are all organized I suppose and looking forward to your trip?
Organized? (Tom laughs.) Oh yes, but it’s not just that the trip is going to be amazing it’s what it means more than anything. Of course we’re going to have an unforgettable experiences but for me the reason for the trip is the driving force. I want to do my bit for cancer research and the only way I feel I can do that at the moment is to try to activate people and raise money. This is my way of doing that.
The last time we spoke you mentioned a stop off in Toronto any more news on that?
Yes, so far definite plans with the Toronto Chapter of the Israel Cancer Research Fund are we’ll be attending a poker tournament, on Saturday, September 22nd. I have been invited to give the opening speech where I’ll talk about my personal journey and my motivations for supporting and choosing ICRF. Also, on September 23rd I’ve been asked to speak at a Garden Party for ICRF Friends & Family. When I get more details I’ll update you.
What would you like to happen now?
For sure that people get involved and also donate and support and do whatever they can. Lots of small donations eventually turn into a lump sum which can be put to use in cancer research. As I mentioned the last time we spoke, we don’t have a set figure in mind that we want to raise but we hope to raise close to US $500,000. So far we’ve raised around US$40,000. In Israel, that’s almost enough funding for two young cancer research scientists.
Anything you’d like to say until we speak again?
I’m overwhelmed by the support and interest we’ve received so far. Keep it coming! It is just amazing. I want to say thanks to our friends, family, people who have taken interest and also thanks for supporting us through news reports on Digital Journal. We’ll be in touch weekly throughout our journey.
