Aurora - An up-and-coming stand-up comedian shot and severely wounded in the Aurora movie theater massacre could be slammed with $2 million in medical bills because he did not have health insurance.
CBS News reports that Caleb Medley was shot in the eye during Saturday's shooting rampage at the Aurora, Colorado premier of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises." The 24-year-old aspiring comedian, who was on a date with his pregnant wife to celebrate the imminent birth of their first child, is now in an intensive care unit in an induced coma.
According to Laugh Spin, Medley has lost his right eye and has brain damage. But that may not be the worst of his troubles. If and when he fully recovers, Medley-- who is uninsured in a nation that lacks single-payer, universal health care-- could face a staggering $2 million in medical bills.
As his wife Katie, 21, delivered a healthy baby boy named Hugo Jackson on Tuesday, Caleb's friends and family were scrambling to raise funds for his massive hospital bill.
"Caleb, he doesn't have any insurance, so I put together a website," longtime friend Michael West told CBS News. "We've talked to him because we know he can hear us. He needs to get better because he is going to be a dad."
Brother Seth says Caleb is showing signs of improvement.
"There are indications that he understands us and can tell who we are," he told ABC News. "His wife talks to him and he shudders. There are obvious signs he understands."
