In a YouTube video clip the youth can be seen making an attempt to snatch the Olympic torch, after shouting Allahu Akbar ('God is great' in Arabic), but security guards quickly intercept him and move the torchbearer away from him.
Two security men, who were running alongside the torchbearer tackle him and bring him to the ground.
The incident happened just before 10am on Friday, 20 July. The Sun
reports that he was arrested within seconds and taken into custody by Kent Police.
reports that a spectator, Jessica Dadozi, said “The torchbearer looked a bit scared, but she carried on running.”
reports that the 17-year old is accused of assaulting a police officer, common assault and a public order offense.
He appeared at Medway Youth Court on Saturday and was bailed on condition that he wouldn’t be “intentionally present” at any Olympic or Paralympic-related event. The case has been adjourned until Tuesday.
