article imageAspiring Reporter among dead in Colorado 'Batman' Massacre

By Sadiq Green     Jul 20, 2012 in Crime
A young woman who was shot and killed while attending the Aurora, Colorado midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises", was an aspiring journalist.
Jessica Ghawi, an ambitious up-and-coming sports journalist was killed when 24-year-old James Holmes burst into Century 16 movie theater early this morning and methodically began shooting patrons, killing at least 12 and injuring at least 59.
After graduating from the University of Texas at San Antonio, Ghawi interned with Mike Taylor, a sportscaster at San Antonio's Ticket 760. Ghawi, 24, recently moved from San Antonio to Denver, where she landed a new job primarily covering hockey for sports website Busted Coverage, writing under the name Jessica Redfield.
Her final post to a hockey writer pal reads: “MOVIE DOESN’T START FOR 20 MINUTES.”
Ironically, Ghawi narrowly escaped a separate shoot-out in Toronto's Eaton Center mall in June, where seven were injured and one died. The young sports writer reflected on how lucky she was and how fragile life is in a blog post about the attack.
"I found out after seeing a map of the scene that minutes later a man was standing in the same spot where I just ate, and opened fire in the food court full of people. ... I would've been in the same place where one of the victims was found," Ghawi wrote.
