Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman is fighting for Gotham in "The Dark Knight Rises," but he is also fighting for President Barack Obama as it has been reported he donated $1 million to a pro-Obama PAC.
Priorities Action USA stated Thursday that Morgan Freeman donated $1 million to the PAC in June. The group backing the president, which has launched a series of ads attacking presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney, was able to raise $6.1 million last month for a grand total of $20.4 million this election cycle.
Freeman issued a statement (obtained by The Hollywood Reporter) for the organization in which he urged supporters of the Democratic leader to combat spending by conservative groups. The latest Hollywood actor to support Obama also highlighted his perspective of accomplishments made by the incumbent figure.
“Pres. Obama has done a remarkable job in historically difficult circumstances. He ended combat operations in Iraq, put in place sensible reforms of Wall Street, saved the auto industry and protected the health care of every American,” wrote Freeman. “I am proud to lend my voice - and support - to those who defend him. Priorities USA Action is doing a great job of protecting the values I believe in. I am happy to help them and I hope others will join me.”
The renowned star recently caught the attention of political pundits when he told Newsweek in an interview that the United States should legalize marijuana and tax it “like we do liquor.”
Freeman isn’t shy about his political beliefs. He captured headlines when he sat down with CNN’s Piers Morgan and called the Tea Party racist.
“The Tea Partiers who are controlling the Republican party their stated policy, publicly stated, is to do whatever it takes to see to it that Obama only serves one term,” explained Freeman. “What underlines that? Screw the country. We're going to do whatever we can to get this black man out of here.”
