Murs' video shows him wearing a "Legalize Gay" t-shirt as he takes on the role of a closeted high school student that hangs out with a homophobic crowd. He's in a relationship with another student and the video shows him briefly kissing the other man. But the video ends in a murder suicide, all to draw attention to the issue of homophobia. He raps, "Shot him right between the eye, then turned it on himself because he refused to live a lie."
Earlier this month R&B artist Frank Ocean
came out in a song on his new album. And Murs says hip hop culture needs more people to speak out.
On his YouTube video, Murs writes: "Animal Style is a song I did for many reasons. The first was to be an advocate for people close to me who are out, and those who have yet to come out. It's also a love song, which is nothing new for me. But with this one I wanted to challenge the listener to ask themselves: Is the love shared by two people of the same gender, really that different than the love I have for my partner of the opposite sex? And finally, I just felt it was crucial for some of us in the hip hop community to speak up on the issues of teen suicide, bullying, and the overall anti-homosexual sentiment that exist within hip hop culture. I felt so strongly about these issues and this song that I had to do a video that would command some attention, even if it makes some viewers uncomfortable. Even if it came at the cost of my own comfort."
Murs is trying to draw attention to the video too on his twitter account.
According to Wikipedia, Murs released his first single in 1993, taken from a self-released album by his first group, 3 Melancholy Gypsies (aka 3MG). His new single "Animal Style" is on his 9th solo album "Love and Rockets Volume 2."
