It is the latest in a disturbing pattern of mob assaults designed to humiliate the victims. The disgusting incident was filmed and posted on You Tube.
According to NDTV
Dipya Bordoloi, the reporter from Newslive who witnessed the attack said "It wasn't molestation, it was like gang-rape." Describing the scene as an angry mob of about 50 people Bordoloi said he asked his cameraman to catch the faces of the drunken men responsible and "close-ups of the attackers' faces show no remorse, many wear a look of satisfaction. Some even smile as they look directly into the camera, almost performing for it."
reported the video of the incident went viral, and the footage has enabled police to identify 11 of the attackers, arresting four thus far.
Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan echoed many who have criticised the news team for filming the incident instead of intervening to rescue the girl. Gulf News
reported Bachcan said "Horrid visuals on TV of molestation of young girl…but just a point. How does TV crew know of it live and why don’t they intervene?" However Newslive defended the reporter, saying not only was he outnumbered by the mob but "If we had shut our cameras, those arrested would have gone scot free."
Other Bollywood stars joined Bachchan in condemning the incident. Shekhar Kapur said As a society we must take collective responsibility for Guwahati for making incidents like this acceptable and rampant" while Vishal Dadlani said India was an "evidently depraved nation."
