There have been a ton of movies, musicals and plays based on the original Wizard of Oz story, but there have been few that have been as star studden as Sam Raimi's newest production.
Oz the Great and Powerful is doing what Hollywood does best these days, by putting together a prequel that will allow viewers to take another look at the Land of Oz. Directed by Sam Raimi, Oz tells the tale of how the Wizard of Oz arrived in this magical land and became its bombastic ruler.
The movie carries some serious star power with James Franco set to play Oz, a Kansas circus magician who goes up in a hot air balloon and gets blown to the fantastical land that Dorothy and her little dog end up in years later.
Franco is joined by several of Hollywood's hottest actresses as Mila Kunis will play Theodora, the woman who is destined to become the Wicked Witch of West, Rachel Weisz takes a turn as Evanora the future Wicked Witch of the East and Michelle Williams is cast as Glinda the good witch.
While you won't be seeing the favorite characters of the Wizard of Oz such as the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion or the Scarecrow, there does appear to be one constant, as the flying monkeys return, though judging by the trailer they are quite a bit darker this time around. Munchkins seems to play a central role yet again.
There isn't much else known about the characters that are going to pop up in this Disney blockbuster, former 'Scrubs' star Zach Braff takes a turn as a character or characters known as Frank and Finley but beyond the trailer what we do know is that the film is set to hit theaters in March of 2013. Look for this movie to generate quite a bit more buzz as we move closer to the release date.
