A 45-year-old man who sustained serious head injuries in a fall from the Athens Acropolis early Thursday morning has died. It is unclear if the man was attempting suicide.
Ta Nea reported the unnamed man fell from the Acropolis at 9.30 a.m. as tourists looked on. According to Athens News the man "jumped from the rear of the Theatre of Dionysus" suggesting a suicide attempt.
Guards at the ancient monument alerted the police and fire brigade and the injured man was rushed to Evangelismos Hospital where he underwent surgery.
Suicides are becoming daily occurrences in Greece's capital as people trapped in desperate economic circumstances look for a way out. Prior to the economic crisis Greece had one of the lowest suicide rates in the world.
