article imageLiam Neeson digs playing a god in 'Wrath Of The Titans' Special

By Earl Dittman     Jun 27, 2012 in Entertainment
Two years after portraying Greek god-of-gods, Zeus, in 'Clash Of The Titans,' Liam Neeson has returned to his 3D throne for the sequel, 'Wrath Of The Titans.' Neeson admits he enjoyed playing a god again -- especially for his multi-million dollar pay day.
It's early-spring, 2012, and Irish-born actor Liam Neeson is not only on the road promoting his latest film, Wrath Of The Titans (the sequel to Clash Of The Titans), but he's also in various stages of filming three different movies -- the sequel Taken 2, reshoots for Battleship and reprising his role as Ra's Al Ghul in director Christopher Nolan's final chapter of his Batman film trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises. So, how does the former forklift driver from Northern Ireland balance his frantic and busy professional life with raising two young children from his marriage to his late wife Natasha Richardson (who died after a tragic skiing accident in 2009)?

"Sorry, I was shouting last night, so I've lost my voice a little bit," Neeson apologizes, before answering how he is able to make so many movies and still be a close and caring father. "Being a single parent, sometimes it's a juggle. But it's great to be offered the work. And I just try and mix it up, basically. And it's as simple as that, you know? However, it's a juggle -- but it's a good juggle, you know?"
After playing such iconic roles as Qui-Gon Jinn from the recent Star Wars trilogy, Alfred Kinsey in director Bill Condon's Kinsey, Henri Ducard in Batman Begins and the title roles in Michael Collins and Rob Roy, most Tinsel Town insiders and all of his fans consider him one of Hollywood's biggest celebrities. He doesn't mind the title, nor the fame and attention, but he has been in the business long enough not to take any of his success for granted. "Becoming a star in this business is a huge amount of Lady Luck, you know?" explains Neeson, who added his voice to a 2005 episode of The Simpsons. "But I believe you create your own luck. Still, luck is a big factor, you know? I've got actor friends in London, one of my dearest friends hasn't worked for five years. And he's a fantastic actor. On stage and on screen. Five years, nada. So I'm just lucky, you know?"
That's why when his was offered the part of Zeus again in the sequel Wrath Of The Titans, he just couldn't turn down the part. "It was a great role -- I don't mind being an all power god from time to time," Neeson confesses, with a laugh. "Plus, it was a chance to work with old friends, my good pal (Ralph Fiennes), it was filmed in great locations (in the UK -- Wales, Surrey and London) and the paycheck wasn't bad, either, you know?"

In The Wrath Of The Titans, it's been a decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, and Perseus (Sam Worthington)—the demigod son of Zeus (Neeson) — is attempting to live quietly as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year-old son, Helius. But unbeknownst to Perseus, a struggle for supremacy has been raging between the gods that will come to threaten his idyllic life. Dangerously weakened by humanity's lack of devotion, the gods are losing hold of their immortality, as well as control over the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades (Fiennes) and Poseidon (Danny Huston). The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous Underworld. Now, Perseus cannot ignore his true calling as Hades, along with Zeus' godly son, Ares (Edgar Ramirez), switches loyalties and makes a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus. The Titan's strength grows as Zeus' remaining godly powers are siphoned...and hell is unleashed on earth. Enlisting the help of the warrior Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), Poseidon's demigod son Agenor (Toby Kebbell), and fallen god Hephaestus (Bill Nighy), Perseus bravely embarks on a treacherous quest into the Underworld to rescue Zeus, overthrow the Titans and save mankind.

To play the Greek/Roman god Zeus, Neeson admits his knowledge of Greek mythology and cowboy Westerns helped in sculpting his performance. "As far as influences go, I'd say it was Westerns and Greek mythology -- it's all the same story, you know?" he declares. "Yeah, certainly for me, it was Westerns. And then eventually, in my twenties I started reading Greek mythology. And in preparation for The Phantom Menace, too! But you had to, because they're insane, Greek mythology stories are -- and Star Wars, too," he adds with a hearty laugh.
On his New York City stop to promote Wrath Of The Titans, the affable and funny former amateur boxer discussed the making of the sequel, what it was like teaming up again with Ralph Fiennes, working with the film's many special effects, why he likes acting opposite tennis balls and Neeson explains what it takes to pull off playing a god.

You were absolutely professional doing Wrath Of The Titans, especially enduring all that torture in so many scenes. Why did you do it?
"First off, thanks for the compliment. And to answer your second question -- They paid me millions!" (laughs)
Which have been your favorite villains to fight with in your movies?
"Hmm. Athenian drug cartels! Just wait until October!" (the release date for Taken 2)

How do you go about playing a god?
"Um, I think you have to treat them as un-godlike. Otherwise, you'd be totally intimidated, you know?"
What was it like working again with your old friend Ralph Fiennes again?
"Who said we were friends? (laughs) No, he is. He's one of my dearest, oldest friends. And he's terrific. On this one, we both felt like pelicans. On the set in Wales, acting with hundreds of extras. And we're looking at each other, to see what each one is doing. But when we did the first one. Clash Of The Titans, we found it hard to work with each other. So I would look at his forehead, and he would look at my forehead. And sometimes when we would make eye contact, it got quite silly. But we were more restrained this time. And you know, we had a lot more deeper, darker issues to act. So we didn't laugh as much! But you have to go for it. Absolutely, yeah."

Did you want anything different for Zeus in this sequel?
"I just wanted more interaction with my son and my brothers, you know? Essentially. Which I think this script certainly provided. And touched on those dynamics of how Hades and Zeus became separated. And then the jealousies that drew them apart, and what not. You know, that's all touched on. And without it going off on a huge, big other tangent. And the father and son relationship, which we can all relate to, I think."
What life lessons do you think mythology still has to offer?
"They're thousands of years old, but they tap into every culture in the world. And they're essentially the same story. Which is essentially that an innocent has to go through a trial ordeal to save his society. And he comes out the other end, having learned something. And that advances his society onward. I must write that down, that's quite good!"

How did you manage to get into your character when you were having to deal with all the special effects at the same time?
"Well, I'm from the old school. From the first Star Wars. Which was colored tennis balls. And I kinda like my tennis balls. I get used to them, you know? And we had lots of little bits of colored tape as well. So you have to act sometimes with bits of tape. And that's okay. Because Ralph would put a smiley face on them! But you hit on something important. (Director) Jonathan (Liebesman) always brought it down to the story. We knew there were going to be 250 explosions. But he always brought it down to where we were. And where our characters were on our journey, at that moment."
What was your favorite scenes that you got to do in the movie?
"My favorite scenes were with Sam (Worthington), at the beginning. When Zeus appears, and asks for his help. And my scenes with Ralph. And the ass kicking!" (laughs)

Which one is your favorite role ever, and did you borrow from your favorite characters to play Zeus?
"Um...Yeah. What was the first question?" (laughs)
What's your favorite role ever?
"They're all special, to be honest, they're all special. And you use whatever you have as an actor, for any part."

What about picking up traits for Zeus from your past roles?
"Um, traits...I thought it was important not to show power. This is the god of gods. So if you try to show that, you immediately weaken yourself. So, it's best to just intimate it. This is the god of gods. You don't have to do anything, you know? You don't have to prove it. You just are. I can't stop being me, you know? But I guess I did, yeah. And I had a great head of hair! That helped a lot, actually! In a strange sort of way."

The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan: The Complete Series
Chinese-American supersleuth Charlie Chan made his cartoon transition with his customary grace, only this time he brought along the clan. Maintaining Hanna-Barbera's winning formula (kids, mysteries, canine, van), the hit kid show also introduced some innovations (the van transforms, a double-sized team, HOWdunnits not whodunits). Most significant among these is the casting of the amazing Keye Luke (Kato, Master Po) as the voice of Charlie Chan. Not only was this the first time that an Asian-American would play Charlie Chan, it marked an apropos "graduation" for Mr. Luke, the original "Number One Son" Lee Chan of the classic Warner Oland Chan mysteries. Among those joining Mr. Luke on voice duties are Jodie Foster (Anne Chan), Lennie Weinrib (Stanley Chan) and Don Messick (Chu-Chu) in this complete 16-episode, two-disc collection. This comedy stars top comedians Tony Rock (Everybody Hates Chris), Rodney Perry (Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family), Faune Chambers Watkins (White Chicks) and many more. Like every stand-up comic who has ever stepped on stage, Jeff Woods (Rock), dreamed of "making it big." Unlike most stand-up comics, Jeff actually got his chance. While on his way to the top, an insecure ego causes Jeff's career to quickly go from good to bad. Now, fresh out of rehab, Jeff is armed with new hilarious comedic material and a burning desire to make it big again -- the right way. DVD Bonus Features: Deleted Scenes and Trailer Gallery.
