Ben Whishaw, the British actor soon to be seen as Q in the new James Bond movie, is reported to be in talks to join Steven Spielberg's latest movie project.
Robopocalypse is based on Daniel H. Wilson's best-selling science-fiction novel of the same name.
Back in October 2010, Deadline broke the news that Spielberg had committed to directing the movie, with a script by drew Goddard. However, until recently, not much more has been forthcoming.
Earlier this week, rumours started circulating that Anne Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises) and Chris Hemsworth (Snow White and the Huntsman) were being sought to play the leads.
Today, Variety claims that the 31-year-old Ben Whishaw ( is top of DreamWorks' list for the role of Lurker.
Whishaw already has an impressive list of television, theatre and movie credits to his name. Films include The Trench (1999), Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006), Brideshead Revisited (2008) and Cloud Atlas (2012).
In 2008, Whishaw starred alongside the late Pete Postlethwaite in Peter Moffat's first series of the BBC 1 drama, Criminal Justice. He returns to TV screens shortly when he reprises his role as Freddie Lyon in the second series of Abi Morgan's 2011 BBC 2 hit drama, The Hour.
In 2004, then just 24, and to great acclaim, Whishaw played the lead in Trevor Nunn's Old Vic staging of William Shakespeare's Hamlet.
All Q'd up!
Whishaw's most immediately forthcoming film projects are the Skyfall, which marks the 23rd instalment in the 007 film franchise, and Cloud Atlas, for Warner Bros., in which he plays Robert Frobisher. For Skyfall, Whishaw is the youngest person to play the iconic role of Q, and the first actor of that role to be younger than the one – Daniel Craig (44) – playing James Bond.
Skyfall, directed by Sam Mendes, will be released in October. Meanwhile, the Lana Wachowski/Tom Tykwer/Andy Wachowski-directed Cloud Atlas is set for a release date of February 2013.
Robopocalypse, a co-production between 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks, is due for a 2014 release.
