San Diego - Break out your running gear Sci-fi fans, this year's Comic-con has just got even more epic. Can you say lightsaber relay?
Lucasfilm Ltd., Nerdist Industries, Octagon, and Machinima have teamed up to present, "Course of the Force." What is "Course of the Force" you ask? Well, let me tell ya about it.
"Course of the Force" is an Olympic-style relay run, where participants will travel from Santa Monica, CA. to San Diego, passing off an official "Course of the Force" lightsaber every quarter-mile until journey's end.
The 100-mile-plus run is set to start July 7, in Santa Monica, and will end in San Diego Wednesday July 11, just in time for this year's annual kick off to Comic-Con. And here's the Princess Leia candle on top of the Star Wars cake, 100% of the proceeds from runner registrations will go to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Founder of Nerdist Industries, Chris Hardwick explains it like this:
"Course of the Force is a five-day Olympic style torch run with lightsabers that goes straight down the California coast fro Santa Monica to San Diego. Each night along the way we're gonna have parties in the different cities, there's gonna be live music, comedy, panels-- we're gonna give away "swag-bags" to people that run--you're gonna get limited edition lightsabers!"
Hardwick adds: "All the proceeds from the run segments will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, so you're running for a good cause and getting to celebrate something you care about, which is Comic-con, which hopefully, you'll be in costume."
Costumes are optional. However, if you do decide to dress up for the run, Hardwick says: "Dress up as anything you want, It's not required but it is strongly encouraged."
The Nerdist founder and geek hero will host the event with co-hosts Ashley Eckstein and Alison Haislip going along for the ride. And if you are like some of us unable to attend, portions of the five-day event will be streamed live on StarWars.com and the Nerdist YouTube Channel.
OK. Now just in case that is not quite enough for the hard-core Star Wars fan, "Course of the Force" and eBay are holding exclusive charity auctions. The auctions have already started but will be running until July 21, so you still have time to bid and get in on the action.
The auctions are featuring over 50 different items including: running spots in the upcoming "Course of the Force" relay, signed merchandise along with limited edition Star Wars and pop-culture items. The proceeds from the auctions will also go to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
So if you plan to enter the race or just follow events online, have fun and remember it's all for a worthy cause.
May the Force be with you my friends.
