The Social Media Analytics Company, Socialbakers, released a recent report where the Latin American region was the fastest growing on Facebook. The country primarily responsible for the growth was Brazil, which grew its user base by 20 million register users that are new to the site.
Countries in the South American continent that also helped fuel the exponential growth for the social network to date include Argentina, Colombia and Venezuela, according to the report
. Even with the South American continent trailing Europe, North America and Asia it has been doubling its Facebook population.
The penetration of Facebook in the South American nation of Brazil
is an amazing feat. The country generally has favored Google’s Orkut social networking site, but the numbers are starting to move in favor of Mark Zuckerberg’s site.
“Brazil, as Facebook country number 7 is leading the rank in terms of its users’ growth. Significant to point out, especially in the country, where Google’s Orkut is still the most popular social media site. Brazil is also 4th largest LinkedIn country with over 6M professional users.”
Latin America isn’t just adopting Facebook on a daily basis, but they’re also spending countless hours on it. The internet research marketing company, comScore, revealed the region also spends on average 7.5 hours social networking during a month.
“Not does nearly 100 percent of the Latin American Internet population visit social networking destinations each month, but they also spend a lot of time on the sites,” said Alejandro Fosk, comScore senior vice president of Latin America. “While social networking isn’t a new phenomenon, we are still seeing strong market growth, changing dynamics among the leading players, and the emergence of new social sites that make it an especially interesting market to watch right now.”
(Analytics Company with headquarters in Reston, VA.) in the data it provided, visitors ages 15 or above accessed frequently Facebook from work and at home. The metrics measured did not include like public access computers, internet cafes, mobile phones and PDAs.
How did Orkut perform in comparison to Facebook with visitors staying on its website? According to comScore, on average Orkut visitors spent 96.6 minutes whereas a Facebook visitor spent 451 minutes. In other words, a Facebook user would spend as much as three times more than an Orkut user on its own website.
The reports from Socialbakers and comScore measured different online behaviors. Nevertheless, the ubiquitous platform of Facebook and is not just attracting users in Latin America, but its making users want to spend significant time on it.
