Assistant Commissioner of Police of Mumbai city in India, Vasant Dhoble is famous for busting sex rackets; but his current zeal to suppress moral code violations has not gone down well with party animals as well as many celebrities.
ACP Dhoble,56, heads the Social Service Branch of Mumbai Police, and is trying to kill city’s nightlife by raiding restaurants and pubs and closing them down forcibly, for flouting rules. Referred to as a ‘prude’ and a ‘moral cop’, his colleagues state that Dhoble has been on the warpath by raiding anything and everything that he conceives immoral, and also by assaulting many in the process, with his weapon of choice- a hockey stick.
His raids are not only restricted to hotels, small eateries, private parties, or dance bars but also at popular, upscale restaurants and nightclubs.
Recently, Dhoble raided the famous Shiro nightclub in Worli alleging it was flouting rules, reported NYDailyNews.com.
IBNLive reported saying his team was armed with a video camera and began videotaping the venue scaring away customers. Later he charged the restaurant for being ‘overcrowded’.
With strict regulations like early closing hours, excessive redtape, overcrowding rules and minimum drinking age been raised to 21 from 18, Mumbai’s nightlife and spirit has already been dampened, giving increased powers to the city’s police and Dhoble is keenly enforcing them.
"I will be able to register cases for immoral activities in each and every hotel. There is no single discotheque where there are no such activities taking place,” Dhoble told Hindustan Times in the month of May.
However, Dhoble doesn’t stop after raiding; he further strikes and assaults people with his hockey stick, supposedly to "deal with" violators of law.
This is not the first time Dhoble is in a controversy, but he has in the past been booked in a custodial death case, suspended, and criticized for showing imperiousness and for dispensing "on-the-spot" justice.
Yet this undeterred cop continues to raid and assault in the city. He was kept out of active posting for long because of his ‘violent behavior’, reports The Times of India.
"I don't mind people partying and enjoying in pubs. I just want rules to be followed. I never act against customers unless they are involved in unlawful or immoral activities", he said in his Defence.
His arrogance was prevalent even in the past where he spread terror among hawkers in Mumbai by beating them in public for encroaching the footpath.
This time his actions have angered many Bollywood stars who have vented out their anger via Twitter.
Dhoble is believed to have the support of the police top brass, which is giving momentum to his brazen assaults.
