Police say they have arrested and charged a 24-year-old woman from Massachusetts for "coercion or enticement of a minor." She allegedly posed as a 17-year-old boy online and enticed a 15-year-old girl to have sex with her using a prosthetic penis.
According to The Smoking Gun, Carissa Hads was arrested on May 24 and charged with traveling across state lines to coerce a minor from West Virginia to have sexual intercourse with her. Police say that after they arrested Hads, they recovered an "artificial flesh-colored penis" from her pants which they suspect she used during sexual encounters with her teenage victim. The Huffington Post reports Hads, according to an affidavit, allegedly had two sexual encounters with the girl, one of which involved vaginal penetration with a prosthetic penis.
According to The Smoking Gun, Hads never undressed during sex with the girl and wore a back brace to conceal her breasts.
Daily Mail reports that police say federal agents arrested Hads on the third occasion she allegedly flew to West Virginia to meet her victim.
According to Daily Mail, an affidavit sworn by an Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Investigator said that Hads, posing as 17-year-old boy James Puryear Wilson, met her victim on an unnamed social networking site on October 2010. She had a Facebook and MySpace page in which she claimed she was a youth pastor resident in Quincy, Massachusetts.
Hads' male alter-ego "Wilson," on his Facebook page, allegedly claimed he had a set of twin sons and said he was "looking for some people to talk to. No fake pages or pervs." "Wilson" allegedly posted a photo of his twin sons on online. Daily Mail reports that the photo came from an ad for a photography website. Using the fake male identity, Hads allegedly became involved in an Internet romance with the 15-year-old from West Virginia, identified in the affidavit only as A.L., Daily Mail reports.
The Smoking Gun reports that "Wilson" allegedly sent A.L. two cell phones she could use to contact him and paid her cell phone bills. A.L. said she used the phone to take naked images of herself. According to The Smoking Gun, A.L. said she forwarded “these pictures, some of which focused on her vagina, to ‘Wilson.’”
"Wilson" allegedly told A.L. he lived in Massachusetts with his aunt Melanie Lodi and said he had another aunt called Carissa Hads. After the online romance had been going on for 14 months, "Wilson" allegedly sent a message to A.L. that he wanted to meet her in person. The meeting was arranged by A.L.'s mother who went with her daughter and two other girls A.L.'s age to meet "Wilson" at a motel, Daily Mail reports.
According to The Smoking Gun, an affidavit sworn by a West Virginia State Trooper Robert Talkington, said "Wilson" stayed in the motel in a room that A.L's mother paid for. According to Daily Mail, the affidavit said that during his stay "Wilson" had sex with the girl.
Two months later "Wilson" stayed at A.L's house for five days, during which he allegedly had another sexual encounter with A.L. The Smoking Gun reports that in a May 8 interview, A.L. told the police that Hads, posing as "Wilson," "pulled his penis through his unzipped pants" but remained clothed, presumable to conceal the back brace she was wearing. According to The Smoking Gun, the affidavit said that at their first sexual encounter at the motel, Hads had only "digitally penetrated" A.L.'s vagina. But during the second trip in which Hads stayed in A.L.'s house, she "penetrated the girl's vagina using a 'fake, flesh-colored penis.'"
Soon, one of A.L.'s friends raised questions about the sexual identity of her friend's boyfriend. She told A.L. that she did not believe that "Wilson" was a man. Daily Mail reports that "Wilson" did not look particularly masculine at "100lbs... five feet and two inches, with distinct feminine features and no visible Adam's apple."
According to Daily Mail, police began investigating after "Wilson" threatened the life of A.L.'s friend who expressed suspicion about his sexual identity. Federal agents arrested Hads during her third trip to meet A.L.
The Huffington Post reports that in West Virginia, the age of sexual consent is 16. West Virginia law defines "statutory rape" as "when a person aged 16 or older 'engages in sexual intercourse or sexual intrusion with another person who is less than 16 years old and who is at least 4 years younger than the defendant.'" Statutory rape in West Virginia carries a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison. The Smoking Gun reports, however, that law enforcement investigation of Hads began after an anonymous complaint was filed with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. She was arrested on her third trip to meet A.L. and charged with coercion or enticement of a minor, a felony that carries a maximum sentence of 30 years.
A.L.'s mother has been severely criticized over her role in the case. Hypervocal comments, "No matter how well-intentioned, this woman brought her underage daughter across state lines to meet a sexual predator."
Daily Mail reports that Hads was held without bond after a federal judge declared her a flight risk and a danger to society.
