As once a major stepping stone for WWE superstars wanting to break into the main event scene from the ranks of the mid-card, the Intercontinental and United States Championships have seen better days as the competition is not what it was in past years.
At Over the Limit earlier this month, Christian won the Intercontinental title from Cody Rhodes after first winning a 20-man battle royal by last eliminating the Miz at the start of the pay-per-view.
For the United States Championship, Santino Marella, a former two-time Intercontinental Champion himself, upset Jack Swagger for the title during an episode of Raw SuperShow last March.
Here are the details from F4WOnline.com (via WrestlingInc.com) on what the WWE wants to do with the titles of Christian and Marella in recent weeks.
The idea of merging the Intercontinental Title and the United States Title was being worked on a few weeks back. Sources say the WWE Title and the World Heavyweight Title won't be merged because WWE needs one major title on each of the RAW and SmackDown tours.
Even though wanting to keep both the WWE and World Heavyweight Championships for Raw and Smackdown, the company should officially do away with the Brand Extension as the line between both brands is pretty much nonexistent these days.
The rosters for both Raw and Smackdown have been so thin with talent in the past few months that combining the two rosters, along with having one major and secondary title, would be the best situation for the WWE.
After nearly merging the Intercontinental and United States Championships in the past few weeks, what do you think would be the best option for the WWE to do with their two minor titles moving forward in the future?
