article imageMonetizing Wi-Fi: Zzzzapp! sells first franchise on Hvar, Croatia

By Paul Bradbury     Jun 8, 2012 in Technology
Hvar - Days after winning first prize at Split Startup Live, Zzzzapp! sells its first Wi-Fi franchise on the island of Hvar in Croatia.
Tokic Technology, d.o.o., creators of Zzzzapp!, a software/hardware system that converts any Wi Fi hotspot into a content delivery platform, confirmed that it had sold exclusive rights to its first franchisee for the island of Hvar in a telephone interview with Digital Journal on June 8, 2012.
"Since winning first place in StartUp Split last week, we have had numerous offers from as far away as Barcelona to bring Zzzzapp! to a global audience," said Zzzzapp! founder Tino Tokic.
"Our goal is global," said Robert Aronson, Zzzzapp!'s marketing director. "There are millions of hotspots all over the planet waiting to be monetized. By selecting key venues to reach tourists, we can not only sell goods and services but present a content rich platform of applications and information to help them while they are in a foreign environment--from where to get the best deal on local tours to today's ferry schedule and currency rates."

So what exactly is Zzzzapp!? It is a very simple, yet very clever piece of technology which provides an advertising platform opportunity wherever there is a Wi-Fi connection in the world. A cafe hosts the system and receives free advertising banners at the top of a landing page, which appears every time someone attempts to log on to the network. The landing page also contains useful information, such as ferry times, weather, emergency numbers and tourist information, as well as non-competitive advertising banners which reach target audiences in real time and in specific locations.
"Our franchisee has already signed up more than a dozen of the island's best known restaurants, tourist agencies and shops," continued Tokic. "His aggressive marketing and decade-long experience working with the Hvar tourist and business community will ensure that Zzzzapp! is used by hundreds of thousands of tourists who flock to Hvar every year," he continued.

Hvar, ranked as one of the top 5 island tourist destinations in the world by Lonely Planet, is "our first test bed." Tokic said, "our marketing strategy is to operate the Zzzzapp! system ourselves in key venues around the globe as well as to franchise the system to select operators where we feel they have the local savvy and IT expertise to do a great job."
Although financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, both parties confirmed that the contract was multi-year and included an upfront advance plus a percentage of sales.
