Police allege the father, who they claim was drunk, forced his two young sons to consume alcohol and then threw them into a pool. This was supposedly done to punish them for drinking his booze the week before.
Police were called to a home in Surprise, Arizona Monday evening. The neighbour who made the call reported crying coming from the home's backyard.
When officers arrived, Kristopher Harvey, 32, came out of the house. The Tuscon Citizen reports Harvey was so drunk he had difficulty standing and speaking. Harvey's two sons, aged 13 and 14, were found in the backyard. Both were crying, vomiting, and obviously intoxicated.
According to the Washington Post, each boy was forced to drink three shots of hard liquor before being allowed back into the house. Harvey was arrested and booked into the Maricopa County Jail on two counts of child abuse.
Harvey admitted forcing his sons to drink alcohol as a punishment but insists he did not make them go into the pool; according to the father, they jumped in.
The week before, Harvey's girlfriend, Karen Edwards, 49, found that the boys had been drinking their father's booze and told their dad. He decided to punish them by forcing them to consume hard liquor. Harvey was quoted by KPHO as saying, Unfortunately it was one of the things I learned when I was a child, that this is how you teach your children to do things. I realize now that it was the biggest mistake of my life.
Harvey added, I've lost my job, I've lost my children, I've now got to come up with $10,000 for an attorney just to fight to keep from having to do 17 to life on two counts.
JoBeth Edwards, mother of Harvey's girlfriend, told KPHO that she agreed with Harvey that he is not a bad guy. She said, Everybody has different forms of teaching children. I think he chose the wrong way. But not out of malice...out of love for his kids.ABC in Arizona reports Harvey's girlfriend was issued a citation for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
