article imagePolice: Woman attacked boyfriend because he wouldn't marry her

By Arthur Weinreb     Jun 5, 2012 in Crime
Naples - If the Florida woman did it, she had a good reason—her immigrant visa expired a few days before and she had to get married to stay in the United States. The 24-year-old denied the assault.
Nikoleta Karoly was arrested at her Naples, Florida home on Saturday by deputies with the Collier County Sheriff's Office. She is alleged to have choked, scratched, and slapped her boyfriend of two months. The violence apparently began after she asked the man, whose identity was not released, to marry her and he gave a resounding "no."
The CBS affiliate in Tampa reports the boyfriend refused her proposal because she had been violent with him in the past. The violence centered around the fact that her immigrant visa that allowed her to remain in the United States was coming to an end.
The boyfriend told authorities they had another argument three weeks before about her visa that was soon to expire. The argument ended with Karoly punching him.
On Saturday, she allegedly punched him so hard he had ringing in his ears. She also slapped, choked, and punched him. According to the man, she also threatened to stab him with a kitchen knife if he wouldn't do the honourable thing and marry her. She really wanted that visa.
Karoly faces one count of battery—touch or strike another against their will.
Karoly denies the allegations. In a defense usually reserved for men, she told deputies the boyfriend's injuries were caused during rough sex. The Naples News reports she said she inflicted the injuries "because it makes it better."
Although the sheriff's office did not release Karoly's country of nationality, according to the Daily Mail, it is believed she is from Hungary.
