If you thought newly crowned 2012 American Idol winner Phillip Phillips would go the way of the Dodo bird and, like other recent champs, fade away - think again. Phillips first single, 'Home' is racking up monster sales.
'Home' has had a fabulous debut week for the season 11 winner, managing 278,000 digital downloads and in the number two spot behind only Carly Rae Jepsen's 'Call Me Maybe' on the Billboard Digital Downloads chart. That 278,000 is the second-biggest digital sales week ever for an Idol contestant's single, close behind a week that was had in 2008 by season 1 winner Kelly Clarkson, whose 'My Life Would Suck Without You' sold 280,000 in its debut week.
Phillip Phillips: Billboard Hot 100
These are numbers that some past winners, such as season 7 winner David Cook or season 9 winner Lee DeWyze, would love and suggest that Phillips will not fade from the scene as those two, and others like Kris Allen in season 8, arguably have done.
The single entered the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart at number 10. As the season's winner, Phillips gets a recording contract for up to six albums, money and other benefits.
